"Oakland, Or. Apr 6, '89. Dear Mamma. I have forgotten where I was when I wrote to you last. I have been sketching all along the coast. Have had a rough trip. All kinds of travelling, horseback, steamboat, stage, rowboat, cars, & on foot, bad weather & general discomfort. But we are back into douglas Co. again which is a lovely country.
