Caption on reverse in ink: "Galen A. Biery Collection - Marathoners signing up for first race, 1911. Joe Galbraith is in center background, hand on hip." Enclosed note: "Signing up in 1911 at Chamber of Commerce. Credit Biery Collection." The first Mt. Baker Marathon began at 10 pm August 10, 1911 in Bellingham, WA. The race used a combination of motor cars, trains, and running to get to the top of the mountain. The objective was publicity to secure roads to the mountain and create a summer resort on the mountain. One route was through Glacier, the other - 8 miles longer but not as steep - was through Deming. Joe Galbraith won the first race.
