Thirteen miners pose at entrance of Blue Canyon Coal , Mine, south Lake Whatcom, WA
The sign above the entrance reads: "No Admittance. All persons not employees are forbidden to enter the mine. Except upon written permit from the general office and with a guide. Blue Canyon Coal Mining Co." Blue Canyon Coal Mine was established in 1890 by James Wardner and JH. Bloedel; it was located at the south end of Lake Whatcom. Barges carried the coal to Silver Beach and it then went by wagon to bunkers on Bellingham BAy. The mine was abandoned in 1920.
