- Schooner Marguerite

- According to Biery's "Looking Back" (p. 154) this is the Marguerite, a 65 foot schooner brought to Bellingham by Captain Hector Gawley. He ran excursions to San Juan Island, then he moved the ship to Lake Whatcom where freight and up to 150 passengers were taken to logging camps and the Blue Canyon Mine. In this photo seven passengers are visible on the upper deck. On February 12, 1907, the ship ran on the rocks at Langtry Point in fog and sank by her stern. Her passengers were rescued.

- The sign above the entrance reads: "No Admittance. All persons not employees are forbidden to enter the mine. Except upon written permit from the general office and with a guide. Blue Canyon Coal Mining Co." Blue Canyon Coal Mine was established in 1890 by James Wardner and JH. Bloedel; it was located at the south end of Lake Whatcom. Barges carried the coal to Silver Beach and it then went by wagon to bunkers on Bellingham BAy. The mine was abandoned in 1920.

- The Ella towed barges filled with coal from the Blue Canyon Mine to Silver Beach on Lake Whatcom, WA. She was named for Ella Downs; M.E. Downs was superintendent of the Blue Canyon Mine. The Ella later became the Prentice named for Prentice Bloedel.

The shoreline in the foreground is littered with wood.

- Description
- A time card for the Steamer Regie accompanies the poem. The Regie ran on Lake Whatcom, Wa, connecting with a stage (probably horse and wagon) to Wickersham. Regie, with a repution as a smuggler on the Sound, was sold to Yorkston and Johnson in 1895 and operated on Lake Whatcom until 1900 when it was traded for a lumber mill owned by Brannian. It burned in 1903.

- Back caption: "Buchanan Cemetery near Lake Whatcom, Wash." According to Whatcom Cemetery records, the Buchanan Cemetery is north of the fire hall at Agate Bay. Original cemetery was 40 acres set aside by Joseph Buchanan a homesteader, as a private family cemetery, but later was opened to any settler. Between 25-50 people were buried there; the last burial was Joseph Buchanan in 1917. By 1974 the cemetery was reduced to 100 feet by 100 feet. Sometimes referred to as Woodlawn Cemetery since Woodlawn was original name of Agate Bay region. (Not to be confused with Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale, WA)See also photo GB2239.

- This is probably the Marguerite, a 65-foot schooner brought to Bellingham by Captain Hector Gawley who moved it to Lake Whatcom in 1906. After being injured in a machinery accident on board, he sold the ship to Captain Lee Pittman in 1907 who operated it until the 1920's. The Marguerite made three daily round trips between Silver Beach and Park on Lake Whatcom.
