Description

Sign over entrance reads: "NO ADMITTANCE--All persons not employees are forbidden to enter this mine except upon written permit from the general office and with a guide -- Blue Canyon Coal Mining Co." A second sign to the right of the first reads "March 19th 1896 -- Gas in 16 other places OK --RC." Blue Canyon Coal Mine, at the southeast end of Lake Whatcom, operated from 1892 until 1920.

A man, wearing a bowler hat, suit and lap blanket, is sitting in an open carriage, drawn by a single horse. They are posed by a lake. In the background are logged-off hills. Back caption: "T. W. Gillette, at Lake Padden." In 1905, T. W. Gillette was President and General Manager of Fairhaven City Water and Power Company until his sudden death, at age 72, on April 10, 1921. He lived at 1614 Larrabee Avenue with his wife and Frederick K. Gillette. Frederick served until 1922 as Secretary of the company.

Front caption: "Bob & Virgie Hayden." Bob and Virgie Hayden wearing ski equipment, posing on a snowy slope. In 1940, Robert Hayden was a student living at 2614 Cornwall Avenue. In 1945, he was in the U. S. Navy and he and Virginia were living at 716 14th Street. In 1947, he was President of Western Washington Aircraft, Inc. From 1948 through 1955 he was first a salesman at B. B. Grocery on State Street,and then he became owner or manager of the store. In 1956, he established Hayden's Thriftway at the corner of 12th and Larrabee and, in 1969, he open Quick-E Foodmart on 13th between Mill and Harris. Mrs. Hayden was a successful business woman as well, and in 1980, Virginia became an officer in Cost Cutter Stores, Inc/Hayden's Phase II. The Haydens owned and operated their stores until retirement in 1988.
