Pacific American Fisheries' large steamship "Clevedon" in Bellingham Bay
-
Date
-
1938
-
Description
-
The 'Clevedon' started life as the Italian motorship 'Feltre' which was rammed and sunk in the Columbia River in 1937. P. A. F. (Pacific American Fisheries) purchased it for $55,000 and had it rebuilt at Portland for a record-breaking $300,000. In 1940 the ship was charted to the Russian government's Amtorg Trading Co. On January 12, 1942, it was at Yakutat doing service as a U.S.Army transport. The ship was loaded with ammunition when a fire of undetermined origin broke out on board. The steamship took a line aboard the blazing ship and towed her out of the harbor. Shortly afterward it was completely demolished by the explosion of her cargo. (See 'The W. H. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest')
