His hands are in his pockets. Boats are in the background. Northwestern Shipyard was founded in 1942 and closed in 1945 - it was one of several wartime shipyards. It was at the end of Harris Avenue in Fairhaven. Jack Gilbert was president, Ira Kelly, vice president, Dan Wilty, auditor and Charles Taylor, superintendent.

Just to the right of the brewery is the cleared path of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad leading north into the woods. The towered, stone structure on the right is Lincoln School, which was demolished for the construction of Interstate 5.

- On verso of image: "Dr. Charles J. Flora, left, president of Western Washington State College, and Dr. Gerard F. Rutan, director of Western's Canadian-American studies program, were on hand as Governor Dan Evans signed a proclamation announcing a symposium on Canadian-American relations to be held at the college in September. A similar proclamation emanated simultaneously from British Columbia's Premier David Barrett in Victoria. The Evans statement requested state and provincial legislators to participate in planning topics for discussion and named Dr. Rutan as coordinator of the fall event.
