1952-05 ----------xxxxx---------- Board of Trustees Minutes - May 1952 - Page 1 ----------xxxxx---------- 680 MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES May 21, 1952 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on wednesday, May 21, 1952, at Edens Hall, at 12:00 o'clock noon. Those present were Mr. Burton A. Kingsbury, Chairman, Mr. Donald Eldridge, Secretary, Mr. Harry A. Binzer, and President W. W. Haggard. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. DISTRIBUTION CENTERS OF LIGHTING SYSTEM IN MAIN BUILDING The problem of removal of the distribution centers of the lighting system in Main Building was again considered. It was decided that Lincoln Bouillon, Consulting Engineer, should be approached to provide specifications for the improvement. NEW NAME FOR NORMAL DRIVE A letter was read under the date of May 7, 1952 from the Bellingham City Council requesting that the College suggest a name for Normal Drive for consideration other than College Drive. It was agreed that the name Western Drive be suggested. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN Letters from the American Association of University Women of May 8 and 9 were read which indicated approval of our preliminary application for membership in the association. Attention was called to questions raised regarding the status of the Dean of Women, and health and housing facilities for women. WAHL FAMILY HOME OFFERED FOR SALE TO COLLEGE The Wahl family, the President reported, would like to sell their large home of Forest Street to the College for housing for women students. It was agreed that the house should be inspected by the Dean of Women. DIPLOMAS TO BE PRESENTED BY CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Presentation of the diplomas at the Commencement exercises on June 13, 1952, it was decided, should be by Mr. Burton Kingsbury, chairman of the trustees. FACULTY LEAVES OF ABSENCE APPROVED Leaves of absence for 1952-53, to carryon advanced study, were approved for two members of the faculty: Helen Gillham, Department of Student Teaching; and Marjorie Muffly, Department of Physical Education for Women. APPOINTMENTS TO FACULTY FOR 1952-53 Appointments to faculty for 1952-53 were approved as follows: Helen Price, Ph. D., State University of Iowa; assistant professor of psychology; annual salary $ 4500.00. James L. Hildebrand, M. A. North Texas State Teachers College, a candidate for the Ph. D. degree at the University of Washington; assistant profesoor of mathematics; annual salary $ 4200.00. Recommendations of the Salary Committee of the Faculty Forum for the coming biennium were reported to be $ 298,700.00 over and above the appropriation for salaries and wages for the present biennium, 1951-53. The estimated total requests for operations for 1953-55 was reported to be approximately $ 394,100.00. It was decided that capital outlay requests presented for 1951-53 be submitted for 1953-55.
