A statement from the auditor was read which showed the following balances in the several funds appropriated for this school. Maintenance $9290.76; Laboratory Supplies $96.00; Furniture $853.82; Library $246.15. The minutes of the meetins of Jan 26th and Feb 2nd were read and approved. A communication was read from Miss. Ordered filed. Principal Mathes reported having received an invitation to deliver the commencement address at the closing of the public schools of Aberdeen. June 1st. Voucher No. 221 - favor Novello, Ewer and Co. $4.41 for (?) sundries. Bill Feb 14th. Library. The following were allowed to be paid out of the library fund special. Voucher No. 15 - favor Book Supply Co. $(?) for books supplied the school library as per attached bill Feb 19th. Voucher No. 16 - favor C.W. Bardeen $12.15 to books furnished the school library as per attached bill of March 6th. Voucher No. 17 - favor A. Flannagan $20.55 to books furnished the school library as per attached bills. Feb. 15th 22nd March 7th. Principal Mathes called up the question of the invitations for the commencement excerises at the close of school. June 14th and advised the board that they should pay for them. The program for that occasion he said had been arranged as follows: Friday June 8th - Model School day; Sunday June 10th - Baccaleaureate day; Monday June 11th - liberary address; Tuesday June 12th - class day; Wednesday June 13th - public reception; Thursday June 14th - Commencement. He further suggested that the board issue a small card giving the dates of the various exercises, and send men to the various newspapers and periodicals in the state. He closed by advising the board to provide the Opera House for the commencement exercises. The board decided to pay for the invitation and to provide the Opera House and the- WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for April 1900 Volume 01 - Page 133 1900-04-09 clerk was instructed to secure the Opera House for June 14th. The chair appointed as a committee on invitations trustees Edens and Teck: as a committee to secure an orator to deliver the literary address trustee Edens and Principal Mathis; to secure diplomas chairman Neterer and Principal Mathes. Principal Mathes was instructed to go ahead and get up the 1900-01 catalogue and have it printed by the State printer. The teachers were given the use of the school building during the vacation period to conduct a summer school. In the matter of securing wood for the ensuing year, the chairman reported mat Morgan Wheeler who had the contract to furnish 225 recks of woodat 1.00 per rick was willing to throw up that contract and furnish 4 foot slab wood at $3.25 per cord instead. The clerk and Janitor were instructed to go to Van Wyck and purchase not to exceed 75 cords of live body per wood at a price not to exceed $3.25 per cord. Principal Mathes said the time had arrived to employ teachers for the ensuing year and that it would be necessary to employ 3 additional ones, which he estimated would entail an additional cost of $230 per month: also that the teachers salaries for the next year should be fixed. Both questions were discussed informally at length but no disposition was made of them. The chairman suggested that it would be well to complete the two south and two north end rooms on the second floor and to extend the heating apparatus to all the rooms on the second floor- WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for April 1900 Volume 01 - Page 134 1900-04-09 not already heated. Also to complete the stairway to the third floor and complete a portion of it for an assembly room. Principal Mathes was instructed to get Architect A. Lee to view the contemplated improvements and have him submit an estimate to the board of the cost of them. Board adjourned. Record approved. L.H. Darwin, clerk. Jere Neterer, chairman. 1900-04-24 Special. The board met in chairman Neterer's office at 7:30PM pursuant to call present the chairman and Trustees Edens and Teck. The chairman presented the contract for 75 cords of wood to be delivered at noons (?) on the B.B. and B.C. Ry. By J.C. and W.A. Coleman at the rate of $2.00 per cord. The chairman and clerk were authorized to sign the contract on behalf of the board which was done in open sessions. The questions of employing the teachers for the ensuing year and of fixing their salaries was broached. Informal discussion followed. Dr. Mathes read a comparative statement of the salaries paid the teachers in other Normal Schools without disposing of the question the board adjourned. Record Approved. L.H. Darwin, clerk. The board met at chairman Neterer's office at 7:30PM present the chairman and trustees Edens and Teck and Princial Mathes. The minutes of the meetings of April 9th and 24th were read and approved. The following communication was read from Janitor McBride: To the board of trustees of the State Normal School, Gentlemen: I wish to have an agreement drawn up specifying what all you require me to do and also what you will do how much compensation I am to have from now until another appropriation be made and available and how much I am to have then. Dated April 30th, 1900. Respectfully J.A. McBride. The communication was ordered filed. Upon the motion of Trustee Edens Janitor McBride was reemployed at the present rate of compensation of $500 per year; erovided that from the date that the next appropriation for the school becomes available that his salary shall be $65 per month provided furhter that in addition to his regular duties as janitor of the building that during the summer vacation he shall perform such necessary carpenter work as may be necessary to arrange or fit the school rooms for the next session of school. A communication was read by the clerk from C.M. Chairman Neterer called Trustee Teck to the chair and then moved the following resolution: be it resolved by the board of trustees of the State Normal School of New Whatcom; that it is the desire of the board of trustees to fix the salaries of the various teachers in the above named institution and to pay the respective teachers the following salaries for the ensuing school year provided sufficient appropriation is made to warrant the same: the said salaries to be paid after the next appropriation made for the maintenace of the said State Normal School by the next legislature of the state is available. It is understood however that until the next appropriation for maintenance for the above named school is available that the teachers shall be paid at the old salary. Trustee Teck moved that the Chairman be authorized and directed to draw up a resolution to go before the board of trade and secure their endorsement of the same. The object of which resolution was to be a plan for providing funds for fixing up additional rooms in the school building thereupon the board declared that they deemed it advisable to ask the citizens of Bellingham Bay to advance sufficient funds to complete four additional rooms a hallway and tailet rooms and the board resolved itself into a committee of the whole to solicit funds to that end and approximated the amount necessary for such purpose at $1500 or $1600.
