1903-06 WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for June 1903WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for June 1903 Volume 01 - Page 260 1903-06-15 The board met pursuant to call in the office of the principal in the normal building, present, trustees Edens and Teck, Principal mathes and the clerk. Principal mathes submitted to the board the proposition of trying to induce some gentleman to contribute $1000 towards the erection on the campus of a boarding house where the scholars could secure meals without taking rooms. To the $1000 thus obtained the board to add some $500 wherewith to complete the building. Then the board to pay to the original instructor in the form of an annual rental, a sum which will in six years repay him the $1000. The board approved of the suggestion and authorized the Principal and Clerk to find the man willing to put up the $1000 expressing their willingness could he be found to expend the remaining $500. A communication was read from Miss Gertrude Earhart expressing her willingness to return to her position in the school if she were given $950 per year. The offer was accepted and the clerk was ordered to forward her a contract. Dr. A.W. Thornton of Ferndale offered to sell the School his flas exhibit for $100. His offer was declined on the Principal stating that the school had no use for it. On the recommendation of Principal Mathes the following scholars were granted Elementary Certificates: Priincipal Mathes was given permission to purchase 600 running feet of blackboard 3 1/2 feet wide at a cost of not to exceed II cents per square foot. Also to make up specifications for the furniture needed for the rooms being completed in the building, and the clerk was ordered to secure bids on the same. Repairs not to exceed $350 were ordered made, the work to be done under the supervision of the Principal. Principal Mathes was instructed to have certain kalsomining done at a const of not to exceed $150. These bills which had been O.K'd by the Principal or the Clerk, were ordered vouchered and forwarded to the State Auditor that warrants might issue: L.H. Darwin, clerk. J.J. Present, trustees Edens, and Teck, Principal Mathes and the clerk. The question of the fuel to be used during the ensuing year was discussed at length, and it appeared to the satisfaction of the board that it would cost a great deal more to burn coal than wood, a change to the former involving among other things the construction of a costly shed. The clerk then submitted to the board the tenders he had received for furnishing the school with wood, and the bid of the Larson Lumber Co. and the B.B. Imp. Co. being identical, viz., $3.25 per cord, it was ordered that the B.B. Imp. Co. be awarded a contract for furnishing the school with $300 cords of wood at $3.25 per cord, and that the Larson Lumber Co. be awarded a contract for furnishing the school with 200 cords of wood at $3.25 per cord, each contractor to have half of the amount of his contract delivered on the school campus by Sept. 1st., and the remainder by Sept 15th, 1903. Professors Eply and Romine were each allowed to expend not to exceed $700 for the purchase of supplies for the chemical laboratory. It was ordered that Miss Ada Hogle expend net to exceed $400 for manual training equipment, $200 for gymnasium equipment, and $100 for a needed apparatus for the Training school. Miss Kate Gompertz of 2III Bancroft Way, Berkeley, Cala., was elected as teacher of Physical Culture and Sciences at a salary of $800 per eyar. Principal Mathes was ordered to secure 5,000 embossed letter heads. It was ordered that Prof. Washington Wilson's salary be paid him in twelve equal payments, instead of ten as heretofore. Booker and Baumeister, who hav ethe contract to complete the unfinished rooms in the Normal Building, were ordered to complete the single remaining unfinished room, provision for which had not been made in their contract.
