Barquentine "E.R. Sterling" off Waitemata Harbor, Auckland, New Zealand
Back caption: "U.S.A. Barquentine 'E.R. Sterling' off Waitemata Harbor, Auckland, N.Z. 1919." In 1910 the Canadian six-masted barkentine 'Everett G. Griggs' was renamed 'E.R.Sterling.' In 1920 she became a vessel of Alaska salmon fishery corporations. In 1925, she made her last voyage to Puget Sound. In July of 1927, while enroute from Australia to the United Kingdom with a load of wheat, she was caught in two storms, one off the Falkland Islands. The result was the loss all of her masts and one crew member. With jury rigged sails, she finally reached St. Thomas where she was towed to London. Capt. Sterling decided that the cost of repair was too much, so she was sold to shipbreakers who dismantled her for scrap."
