Becoming Salmon-Safe - what it means for Vancouver International Airport

In 2016, Vancouver International Airport became the first salmon-safe certified airport in North America. Since that time, we have embarked on a number of initiatives to protect salmon and enhance habitat including incorporating green storm water infrastructure into the Long Term Value Parking Lot, approving a list of drought-tolerant and native plants, and completing an assessment of habitat enhancement opportunities, with a planned construction of a project in 2020. We have worked closely with the Musqueam Indian Band on ecosystem enhancement including undertaking the removal of invasive species. This presentation will focus on what does it mean for a rapidly growing airport to be salmon-safe and make a commitment to ecosystem health and how it has changed our management practices on Sea Island.
