 1194 MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES April 15, 1965 A
special meeting of the Board of Trustees of Western Washington State
College was held April 15, 1965 in Room 215 of Haggard Hall. Present were
Mr. Joseph Pemberton, Mr. Marshall Forrest, Mrs. Bernice Hall, Mr. David
Sprague, and President Harvey Bunke. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF
MARCH 11, 1965 The minutes of the meeting of the Board of March 11, 1965
were approved. APPOINTMENT OF NEW FACULTY President Harvey Bunke
recommended the appointment of the following faculty members, effective
September 1965: Mr. Colin E. Tweddell, Associate Professor of Anthropology
B. A., M. A., Ph. D., University of Washington Base nine months' salary:
Not less than $ 10,355 Miss Madelin Bronsdon, Instructor of Anthropology B.
A., University of British Columbia; M. A., to be completed at that
institution. Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,000 Salary
contingent upon completion of M. A. by September; to be $ 5,900 without the
M. A. Mr. Arthur Dimond, Instructor of Music B. A., Wil1iamette University;
M. A. expected in June 1965 from the University of Oregon (one year
appointment) Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,500 Mr. Thomas
Schlotterback, Assistant Professor of Art B. F. A., M. F. A., University of
Kansas; Ph. D., in process at State University of Iowa. Base nine months'
salary: Not less than $ 8,900 Mr. Anthony Shafton, Instructor of English A.
B., Harvard: M. A., Stanford Base nine months' Salary: Not less than $
6,500 Miss Chappelle Arnett, Assistant Professor of Women's Physical
Education. B. S., Centenary College; M. S., Purdue University Base nine
months' Salary: Not less than $ 7,000. Mr. Leland W. Farley, Instructor of
English A. B., Whitman College; M. A., Montana State University Base nine
months' salary: Not less than $ 6,250 Mrs. Nita G. Bunnell, Instructor of
English A. B. Louisiana State University; M. A., University of Oregon Base
nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,250 Mr. Samuel P. Kelly, Assistant
Professor of Education B. A., B. A. Ed., Western Washington State College;
Ph. D. expected June 1965, from the University of Chicago, Base nine
months' salary: Not less than $ 8,111 Dr. Robert Meade, Associate Professor
of Psychology B. A., Indiana University M. A., and Ph. D., University of
Pennsylvania Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 10,005

of Nebraska Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,750 Mr. Wayne C.
Muller, Instructor of Political Science B. A., Huron College; M. A.,
University of Minnesota; expects his Ph. D., from the University of
Washington in 1966. Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,750 Miss
Jane Merritt, Instructor of English B. A., M. A., Texas Technological
College Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,500 Miss Nina B.
Haynes, Instructor of English A. B., Duke University; M. A., University of
North Carolina Base nine months' salary: Not less than $ 6,500 Dr. Byron H.
McCandless, Professor of Mathematics B. S., Colorado State University; A.
M., Ph. D., Indiana University Base nine months' salary: Not less than $
12,000 Mrs. Hall moved acceptance of these appointment; Mr. Forrest
seconded the motion; the motion passed. APPOINTMENT OF ADDITIONAL SUMMER
FACULTY President Bunke recommended the appointment of the following
additional summer (1965) faculty: Thomas R. Glennon, M. A. Department of
Geography (9 week session) $ 1,800 Priscilla Kinsman Department of
Education (6 week session) $ 1,200 Mrs. Hall moved approval of the
recommendation; Mr. Forrest seconded the motion; the motion passed.
APPOINTMENT OF RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN GEOLOGY President Bunke recommended
the appointment of Dr. June Ross as a Research Associate in Geology. Mr.
Forrest moved approval of this recommendation; Mrs. Hall seconded the
motion; the motion passed. ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIONS The Board noted the
following: Transfer of Dr. Richard Feringer to administrative status.
Appointment of Professor Halldor Karason as Director of General Studies,
effective July 1, 1965, for a two-year period. Professor Robert Christman
has asked to be relieved of his studies as Chairman, Department of Geology;
Appointment of Professor Don Easterbrook as Chairman, Department of Geology
for a four-year period ending July 1969. Appointment of Professor Walter
Robinson as Chairman, Department of Foreign Languages, for a four-year
period ending July 1968. RESIGNATIONS FROM THE FACULTY The following
resignations were noted: Walter Laffer, Department of Mathematics Frederick
Olsen, Department of English Lloyd Rolfe, Department of English Herbert
Kariel, Department of Geography Sheldon Watts, Department of History Eugene
Kim, Department of Education REQUESTS FOR LEAVE WITHOUT PAY President Bunke
recommended that the following requests for leave without pay be granted.

Peter Mazur, Department of Sociology-Anthropology, 1965-66 Professor John
Reay, Department of Mathematics, 1965-66 Mrs. Hall moved approval of these
requests; Mr. Sprague seconded the motion; the motion passed.
SCIENCE-MATH-COMPUTER BUILDING - preliminary plan Upon the recommendation
by Mr. Harold Goltz, Mrs. Hall moved that the preliminary plans of April
15, 1965 for the Science-Math-Computer Building presented by Mr. Ibsen
Nelson be approved; Mr. Sprague seconded the motion; the motion passed.
NAMING OF THE 1966 DORMITORY This item was deferred until a later meeting.
CONSIDERATION OF THE LENGTH OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR. After discussion of this
matter, Mr. Sprague recommended that it be referred to the Faculty Council
for discussion before the Board takes formal action. SECOND HIGH STREET
DORMITORY The Board indicated their definite plans to proceed with the
second High Street Dormitory. A resolution by the House of Representatives
was read to the Board commending Western Washington and the Department of
Education for the proposal to work with disadvantaged children. ADJOURNMENT
