A crane on a floating barge readies to haul the bottom half of the badly-damaged hull of the cannery tender "Howkan" out of the water as tug boat "Barbara Foss" steadies the wreck
On October 24, 1949, while moored at the Bellingham facility, the Pacific American Fisheries' "Howkan" was torn in two by an explosion. Two crew members were seriously injured, and waterfront buildings were damaged by the blast.
