The race used a combination of motor cars, trains, and running to get to the top of the mountain. The objective was publicity to secure roads to the mountain and create a summer resort on the mountain. One route was through Glacier, the other - 8 miles longer but not as steep - was through Deming. Joe Galbraith won the first race.
