An elderly Archibald Shiels in suit and tie stands next to large bell on display
Archie Shiels was born in 1878 in Edinburgh, Scotland. After being educated int he U.K. he moved to Vancouver, B.C. and then to Alaska during the gold rush where he worked in railroad construction and gained a great knowledge of Alaska that was an asset when he worked for Pacific American Fisheries. At P.A.F. he was managing director and eventually became president in 1932, then chairman of the board in 1936. He authored four books. He died in 1974.
