1899-12-18 The clerk read the following communication from Janitor J.A.
McBride. New Whatcom Wash. Dec. 18, 1899. To board of trustees state normal
school. Gentlemen: since I have thought the matter over carefully, and as
the means for the maintenance of the school is limited, and that some of
the teachers are getting only $50.00 per month, I believe that it would not
look just right for the janitor to get as much as a teacher. I have
concluded that I will remain at the old salary. I am respectfully J.A.
McBride. Mr. Edens said that he believed that Principal Mathes would not
like to see a change made unless it would mean considerable saving to the
school. Mr. Teck expressed himself in a similar strain and added that the
board was aware that Mr. McBride knew his business while a new man would
have to learn his dutues in a measure. The communication of Mr. McBride was
received and place in file. Mr. Teck moved, and Mr. Edens seconded that Mr.
McBride be continued as janitor at the old salary of $500 per year. The
motion prevailed. The clerk was ordered to draw the teacher's payroll on
Dec. 18 instead of Dec 31st that they might have their salaries before
Christmas. The state auditor refused to issue the warrants. Board
adjourned. Record approved. L.H. Darwin, clerk. Jere Neterer, chairman.
