- Slide with caption in ink: "Soapy Smith Story" and stamped: "Dedman's Photo Shop - Skagway, Alaska" and "Jul 68..." Ten photos on display relating to the infamous con man Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith, known for his connection to organized crime in Colorado, the Northwest and Alaska. The name "Soapy" came from his soap bar swindles where he conned unsuspecting buyers into thinking they might win bug bucks that were supposedly wrapeed around the soap bars. He lived from 1860 until 1898 when he was shot dead in a gun fight in Skagway.

- Caption on front in ink: "John Bennett and his heather from Mt. Beaker 1868" Bennett stands by a small round table pointing at a pot of heather. Bennett came to Whatcom in 1858 from Glasgow, Scotland seeking gold and worked in the Sehome Coal Mine earning enough to purchase the Compton Claim beyond the Eldridge homestead. He was a horticulturist who started the first nursery in Whatcom which was the source of many Whatcom County plants.

Caption written on negative: "Soapy Smith - Skagway, Alaska - July 4, 1898[sic]" (should be July 7, 1898 since he was on the way to the gun fight) This is likely the last picture of gangster Soapy Smith taken before he was shot in a gun fight in Skagway on July 8, 1898. Contains drawings of Indians, loggers, towns (Port Townsend, Victoria, Seattle, Olympia, Nanaimo) and a map of the Puget Sound.In front of the folder containing the article, its title is written in ink on a sheet of paper addressed to Pacific American Fisheries, 401 Harris Ave., Bellingham, Wash.

- Caption on front in ink: "Pike 1890 Block." The Bellingham Bay National Bank at the northeast corner of State and Holly Streets. This was constructed of Chuckanut sandstone in 1890. The proerty was purchased by Leonard Pike around 1900. The building was occupied by Puget Sound Power & Light for many years. There is an awning on the ground floor of the building in the middle of the block and a sign on a post that says "Drugs." A man stands in the street beside the building.

- Elmheim, the Victorian mansion built by Henry Roeder at Elm and Monroe Streets. It was finished in 1898; Elizabeth Roeder died in 1897 and Henry in 1902. Roeder descendants lived in the mansion until it became a bed and breakfast inn. It was torn down in 1956 to make way for apartments. See also photos gb2677 and gb2897.
