- Hidden in an Oaxacan Market - Oaxaca, Mexico
- Description
- This photo is particularly important to me because it features Senora Mane, a lovely woman who brought us into her family to experience the local traditions in Oaxaca, Mexico around day of the dead. Here we are in front of her stall in a market in Oaxaca, where you can see the traditional "papel picado" that she sells. This brightly colored paper is just one of the many traditions she introduced us to that week, along with traditional foods, the altars for "Dia de los Muertos," and the celebrations of her hometown. Her open house and heart created an unforgettable trip and allowed us to gain an amazing understanding of Mexican traditions and culture.

- Description
- Before I went to Greece I didn't know anything about the sheer amounts of cats that roam the streets. Everywhere we went, especially in cities, cats would be all around. Even up in monasteries and historic sites we visited, cats would be there. This cat, was right outside the old Greek theater at the Oracle of Apollo.

- Kioni Paniyiri (Town Festival) - Greece
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Our last official evening together as a group landed on the very special evening - Kioni's Paniyiri or town festival. A stage was built, the dancing circle cleared, food prepared, and lots of seating for the bustling, wildly entertaining evening of feasting on great food, dancing with the whole town, and laughing together. It was a wonderful way to say goodbye to the little village that we all fell in love with and to each other, after forming a close-knit bond in a short amount of time.

- Passing Through Mountain Passes - Ladakh, India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo captures our group walking along the first mountain pass in the Himalaya Mountains. We traveled along the passes by jeep, van, or travel bus, along slivers of roads meant for compact vehicles, and dodging cliffs and edges the entire ride. The structure on the right of the photo is called a stupa, a symbolic structure within Buddhism, a source of fascination and learning while abroad. Stupas were scattered throughout the land, along mountain passes, roads, and within every village on the Tibetan Plateau.

- Maasai Modesty - Tanzania
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Upon her realization, an hour into our homestay, that I had brought my camera along, she rushed us out of the hut made entirely of tree branches and goat dung to take pictures of everything she could. But as soon as the camera turned on her, her eyes cast downward, her way of showing modesty and dignity in her Maasai culture. Flies coated her scalp, and her brilliantly-colored clothing was dingy from wear and work, but her joyful spirit was contagious. I left that day with hundreds of photos taken by the true residents of the land.

- Time is Precious - France

- Description
- This photo was taken from the top floor of the Musee D'Orsay. Looking through the back of that clock led me to think back in time, back through the years that I have lived, and I was reminded how short and precious time is. Sure, I have regrets, but time is too precious to let those past mistakes influence your future successes. So, the steady hands of this great clock, I keep moving forward - making the most of these amazing experiences that I am blessed to have.

- Description
- This is the first picture we took as a group after all arriving in Italy! Taken in front of one of the first sights we visited (the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padova, Italy), our guide (who was taking the picture) allowed us to have a little fun with the panorama feature on my camera. If you look closely, you'll see something that isn't quite right. But it was still the first great picture of all 13 of us Vikings. 🙂

- Description
- This photo was taken in Cappadocia, Turkey, home to perhaps the largest underground city in the world, home and hiding place to some of the first Christians. Their structures were reminiscent of ant hills. This particular picture was taken in a "castle", built into a hillside, it had a watch tower/window that required a precarious climb up a crumbling staircase as well as multiple churches in its core.

- Lunchtime in the Serengeti - Tanzania
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo was taken late afternoon on an exceptionally warm day in Serengeti National Park. A hundred meters from the road lay two large lionesses and a group of seven cubs. When the pair stood to stretch for a moment, every cub pounced on the chance for an afternoon snack. The lions stood in the middle of a large open savanah, a characteristic landscape of the Serengeti. This was the first time we had seen so many cubs in one location with so few adults nearby.

- Description
- This shot of Taipei 101. I had been to the top of the tower earlier and to my luck visibility was great. When I descended, the fog started to roll in. Going to Taiwan was my first real time traveling totally by myself and I knew virtually nothing about the country before arriving. This picture was taken after travelling to the very last subway stop with some locals to hike up Elephant Mountain, which provides a killer view of the city. Taipei 101 really dominates the skyline of the city, and that can be seen in this photograph where the top is not even visible due to how high it reaches.

- Plaza Mayor at Night - Salamanca, Spain
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This was taken in Salamanca, Spain, where we did our studying. This is in the plaza mayor at night, when all the lights were turned on. This was single-handedly the most important place in our trip because this was the place where you met up with people if you had to go somewhere, where you went to hang out if it was too hot in the dorms, where you went to grab a quick tapa and vino after or before dinner, and also, when the world cup was going on, they brought out TVs so the whole community could watch the world cup together. This is Salamanca.

- Namahage-san?? - Japan
- Date

- Description
- The Namahage are a local tradition in Akita Prefecture. They are essentially folklore-esque monsters played by ordinary people in town, who dress up once a year and go door to door drinking lots of sake and scaring the children into behaving. They also tend to appear in tourist locations as they are somewhat of an icon of Akita. This picture presents my slightly bewildered reaction to encountering one up close.

- Fuji-san - Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Here we have Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, as seen from a small village called Oshino. One thing that my study abroad advisor told me that really stuck with me was, "Studying is important, but also try to take classes that you can only take in Japan." Japanese Folklore was one of those classes. One weekend, we went on a field trip all the way to Mount Fuji. We had to take a two-hour train ride by ourselves, but after we arrived, our professor had readied three rental cars for us, and he was paying for the rest of the trip. We got to go many places including a local Shinto shrine, the village of Oshino, the Narusawa Ice Caves, Aokigahara, and also Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji was still closed at this point, so we only got to go up halfway, but it was still quite the experience. I've studied a lot about Japanese culture, and I've met many Japanese people prior to my year abroad in Japan, so nothing really surprised me. But it wasn't until the very moment that I took this photo that I finally got a clear look at Mount Fuji with my own eyes; that I finally thought, "Wow, I'm really in Japan."

- In the Land of Giants - Norway
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- The barren, rocky landscape of Jotunheimen (English: The Home of the Giants) is a stark contrast to Norway's many lush forests; a contrast intensified when you fall asleep on the bus, surrounded by tree-covered hills, and wake up to see only grass, rocks, shrubs, and rugged mountains, rising out of the earth like waking giants. It was like waking up on an entirely different world. As a part of the excursion, we hiked to the top of one of those mountains — Bitihorn. It is from there, exhausted and sore from the rough 2000 ft. ascent, that I captured this picture. Even though I was surrounded by many of my fellow international students, the extensive Norwegian landscape and immense sky made me feel incredibly small and insignificant until I realized that, as a member of the international community, I can break down mountains — mountains that still separate many countries of the world — through friendship, peace, and an open-mind.

- Mini-Monks at the Tawang Monastery - India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- These young monks were playing on a cell phone on a rooftop just outside of the gompa at the Tawang Monastery. Due to its remote location and restricted access for foreigners, the Mon region of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India is one of the last areas in which Tibetan culture remains mostly intact. With the recent construction of a road leading to the nearby border with Bhutan, the region is no longer as isolated and is increasingly open to outside influence. This photo offers an interesting juxtaposition of traditional culture with the products of such globalization.

- Cherry Blossoms and Peace Signs - Japan
- Date

- Description
- Here is a photo of my friends from Asia University (top row) and me after a day of sitting under the cherry blossoms and sipping on some sake. We asked a stranger to take our photo, and it turned out he was a local high schooler. When he and his friends (bottom row) learned that I was an American student abroad, they really wanted to get a photo together, so we took one big photo together. Here, I'm sporting a WWU T-shirt which doubled as my band uniform when I performed with my AUAP friends at WWU. And of course, no photo taken in Japan is complete without the customary peace signs.

- Description
- Calle Betis (the row of buildings) and the Puente de Triana (the bridge), both pictured, are two of the most popular gathering spots in Sevilla, Spain. This is where the locals spend their time eating tapas with friends, and shopping at the Mercado de Triana (Triana Market) for fresh fruits and vegetables. Sevilla became my second home while I was there, and this little slice of the city was a huge part of that. This photo was taken on my last night there, right after the sun had set.

- SakuraSakura - Japan
- Date

- Description
- One of the things I have dreamed of doing since I started studying Japanese was to go Hanami (literally flower viewing). Hanami involves going to the park and sitting under the beautiful cherry blossoms while enjoying food and drinks with friends and family. To me, cherry blossoms are one of the most aesthetically pleasing things to the eyes. Hanami ususally lasts about a week, and it's so big in Japan that they have blooming forecasts so that you can find out when the cherry blossoms are at their peak. It's times like these when I wish I actually had a real camera, as even this photo does not capture the true beauty of the cherry blossoms I saw that day.

- TOKYO IS YOURS - Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Tokyo was an amazing experience for me. The city seemed so developed and alive, while still managing to keep in touch with traditional Japanese culture. I was able to see much more of just a sheer variation of people in Toyko. From businessmen in suits, to guys with crazy spiked orange hair, to girls dressed up like something out of a cartoon. With all of the different shops selling clothes matching each and every different style, Tokyo really seemed like a city where one could be themselves and do what they wanted. It also helped that the weather was wonderful. This particular photo was taken in a more edgy, counter-culture, university age district. As one can see the graffiti and alternative stickers plastered all over the sign. This photo made me realize that despite its size, even a city of 25 million people is a different space to each and every separate person in it. The people make the city, not the other way around.

- Duomo on a Foggy Morning - Florence, Italy
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Almost every morning for 8 months I would walk past the Duomo in Florence to go to class. The Duomo, a massive Cathedral that looms over the city like a giant fist, casts it's shadow and impression on all that visit Florence. Needless to say, it is hardly ever without tourists surrounding its glistening marble walls. This photo was taken on a foggy morning that I had to wake up at 4 am to catch a bus, and there was not a single other person in Piazza Del Duomo. As I rushed to catch the bus I momentarily looked up to see the giant structure looking back at me. I felt small but peaceful as the shutter from my camera echoed across the stone. It was a moment I will not forget.

- KAMAKURA DAYS - Kamakura, Kanagawa, Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Our WWU friend Daniel Lizarraga (left) was visiting from Akita located in northern Japan, so we planned a weekend trip to Kamakura, Kanagawa, better known as the home of the samurai (12th and 13th centuries). The town was filled with lots of historical monuments, mainly Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Pictured behind us is the Kamakura Daibutsu, or Great Buddha of Kamakura, and we found out that it's actually hollow inside. Kamakura is a historical city with lots to see, and the locals are very friendly, too. One elderly woman that we talked to while we were in her shop told us that our host university, J.F. Oberlin University used to be an all-girls school, something that not a lot of people know.

- Description
- I captured this panoramic photo of the fantastic wooden sculpture Espacio Metropol Parasol during my final weeks abroad. The structures are known more affectionately by the locals as Las Setas which translates to 'the mushrooms.' I visited Seville twice and was awe-struck both times by these structures. My favorite part of this location is that when the mushrooms were being built, starting in 2005, the construction revealed ancient roman ruins from the first century underground. The 6 mushrooms now span 490x230 feet, but also below there is a museum where you can learn some of Seville's incredible history and see the ruins for yourself. Modern juxtaposed with the ancient.

- Two weeks into my international internship, I had the opportunity to visit a small mountain village known as Santa Felix and tried paragliding for the first time. In a way, I liken paragliding to the study/intern abroad experience as a whole. The prospect of doing it is intimidating, perhaps even a little frightening. Yet once you take the plunge, you’ll find yourself floating blissfully through the sky, having the time of your life, and seeing the world from a perspective that you never would have been able to if you hadn't taken a chance.

- The Alhambra - Granada, Spain
- Date

- Description
- This picture was taken in Granada, Spain, where I think I learned the most! This was probably the most important city for us, because it is the very city that Christopher Columbus received permission from Isabel and Ferdinand to set sail to go to India; which obviously he ended up in what is now the United States of America! This picture was taken from way up in The Alhambra, which is a giant Moorish castle from the 11th century. Absolutely breathtaking.

- A new cultural awareness of happiness being our main priority - Zanzibar, Tanzania
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This is a photo of me with one of the local girls in the community that we spent most of our time in. She was one of the students that came to our after-school tutoring program, and always had the biggest smile on her face. Her smile was contagious and reminded me that happiness should always be our number one priority above all else.

- Guatapé, Colombia
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo was taken in Guatapé, Colombia, about an hour and a half away from Medellín. Guatapé is home to an impressive tower. After a challenging 700-step climb, we were treated with one of the most breathtaking views any of us had ever seen. Colombia, I have learned, has no shortage of natural beauty.

- Description
- For the faculty-led trip to La Paz, Mexico our group took a trip to Balandra beach. There it has beautiful white sandy beaches as well as the iconic "mushroom rock." The story goes that someone knocked off the top of the rock and then the government paid to cement it back on so that it wouldn't fall off again.

- Jhamtse Got Style - India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo was taken right after the Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community 8th and 9th grade boy's volleyball team, Jhamtse Got Style, found out that they had earned another chance at winning the Lumla volleyball tournament. These boys grew up together at Jhamtse Gatsal, a community, school, and home for over 85 orphaned and abandoned children from the surrounding area, and have been best friends for years. The entire Jhamtse Gatsal community had taken the thirty-minute truck ride to Lumla to watch their team compete, and the boys were overjoyed, though exhausted, to share this victory with their brothers and sisters. As a visitor to this community, it was really striking and joyful to see the community come together to cheer their team on and to celebrate their win.

- Trevor, Junior, and Steve - Kenya
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- In Kochia, Kenya the main focus of my study abroad trip was to build relationships, little did I know the strongest relationships I built were with these three boys. Everyday while walking to the Secondary all girls school, they would walk with me and ask me how my day was and in return I asked them and gave them a ride or two on my shoulders. The most valuable thing I learned from them was that I did not have to seek to discover local culture. While they couldn't communicate in English, I discovered what it truly meant to be Kenyan through them: to love, to take initiative, and practice compassion.

- Gwanghwamun - South Korea
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo was taken on the first week of my one-year adventure in Seoul, South Korea. I wasn't sure what to expect of this huge mega city, but it just kept getting better. This photo is taken at the main gate of the palace called "Gyeongbok-gung" located nearby to Seoul's city hall. What astounded me about this palace is that from the inside, one can see the giant skyscrapers powering Korea's economy in the background. The mixture of contemporary and ancient architecture was truly astounding. The past of Korea's culture was contained in this small area of palace, while it's modern day culture was shown behind it. In this shot, I am capturing a bit of the former.

- Description
- This was taken in the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain at dusk. This is a huge landmark in Spain, where people can enjoy the intricately decorated architecture. There are even ducks you can feed! Outside of the plaza is a huge garden that you can get lost in for hours! It was amazing to sit by the fountain and watch the sun set over Seville in the Plaza de España.

- Double Rainbow Kitchen Superteam Go! - India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- I spent the summer of 2014 completing a health education internship at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, outside of Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh, India. One of my duties was to create a list of observations and suggestions for the community regarding the improvement of kitchen sanitation. I started my observations by volunteering an extra set of hands to help make dinner for the community. I ended up loving my time with the kitchen staff so much that I was regularly hanging out in the kitchen and peeling potatoes or grinding garlic for thukpa (thick Tibetan-style vegetable noodle soup) several nights a week. This photo is of Sharda, me, Kalu, and Rajiv (left to right), part of the kitchen "superteam" posing in front of a double rainbow outside of the kitchen at Jhamtse Gatsal.

- Washing the fundamentals - Rwanda
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- I will never take washing machines for granted again. The first time I attempted to hand wash my own clothes I was so clueless that one of the maids, with a look of surprised disapproval, walked over, pushed me aside and showed me how it was done. I watched carefully for the mysteries of the inside of washing machines had elude me for the last 24 years. Despite my first hand education, my subsequent clothes washing's left my garments nearly as dirty as before I started. How can something as fundamental as washing my own clothes be something that I had absolutely no idea how to do?

- Italian Dolomites - Italy
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo was taken during a weekend trip to northern Italy in well known Dolomite Mountains. This trip was significant to me because I made it completely alone, I traveled on local buses and trains, and I got by as much as I could communicating in the Italian language. Once I was on the ascent to Schlernhaus mountain refuge on Mt. Shlern (formerly part of Austria) I was overcome by complete serenity. I stayed the night and hung out with some locals drinking Amaro Montenegro, and woke up early and snapped this photo about 2 miles away from the refuge.
