- 7 Rila Lakes Field Trip
- Date
- 2019
- Description
- This is a photo of the 7 Rila Lakes. We took a field trip there as part of my Intro to Bulgarian course and spent an entire day marveling at the natural beauty of Bulgaria. I managed to reach all seven lakes during the hike, and after stopping for lunch, my Bulgarian teacher had us sing some Bulgarian folk songs she'd brought. None of us were native speakers and we probably didn't do the songs justice, but other hikers stopped to listen and it was a beautiful song in the spirit of the lakes.

- Description
- After coming to Korea, I have discovered a newfound love of Korean barley tea and I find myself drinking it almost every day. Busan was no exception and as I walked along the seaside trail of Haeundae beach, I briefly set down my drink to take in the beautiful scenery. Everything around me was so stunning and I was glad to have my little bottle of barley tea along with me.

- The Alhambra - Granada, Spain
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This picture was taken in Granada, Spain, where I think I learned the most! This was probably the most important city for us, because it is the very city that Christopher Columbus received permission from Isabel and Ferdinand to set sail to go to India; which obviously he ended up in what is now the United States of America! This picture was taken from way up in The Alhambra, which is a giant Moorish castle from the 11th century. Absolutely breathtaking.

- Amazonian False Scorpion - Ecuador
- Date
- 2019
- Description
- Our guide in the Amazon, Rolando, saw this false scorpion (actually a spider) on the ground and picked it up for us. In the picture, it's sitting on my elbow, while Jeremy looks a little bothered in the background. The Amazon was one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced. It's so beautiful, and feels so peaceful. My time in Ecuador, and especially my time in the Amazon, made me realize how much I want to travel more, and try everything I can (like holding the false scorpion, or eating live beetle larvae at the local village). The trip inspired me to pursue a career abroad, particularly in developing countries like Ecuador.

- Description
- I love this photo for so many reasons. The way the cathedral looked in the sunlight, the fact that it was such a cloudless day in Veliko Tarnovo, and the fact that the jet streams in the sky in the background remind me of shooting stars. I couldn't be more grateful to be in such an incredible country like Bulgaria!

- Between the Breaths - Leeward Islands
- Date
- 2019-07-25
- Description
- As a student here at Western I have found myself studying so hard to reach my goal, but abroad I was able to experience the goal I am after and seemingly rejuvenated my passions to find excitement in continuing on with the daily grind. As a SCUBA diver, it's hard to explain the emotions and thoughts you experience while underwater. Alongside the silence comes a quiet mind, or a place to let your thoughts drift off with ease. In this picture we are diving off if the coast lines of Statia, an island within the Leeward Islands, and ventured to an abandoned anchor. The anchor itself was immovable and forever stagnant, but the life around and atop the anchor encouraged you to take slower and deeper breaths, to stay down a little longer. Each dive brought to my attention how much I adore the lifestyle of diving, and how the path I am chugging along, is surely the right path.

- Calle Betis - Spain
- Date

- Description
- Calle Betis (the row of buildings) and the Puente de Triana (the bridge), both pictured, are two of the most popular gathering spots in Sevilla, Spain. This is where the locals spend their time eating tapas with friends, and shopping at the Mercado de Triana (Triana Market) for fresh fruits and vegetables. Sevilla became my second home while I was there, and this little slice of the city was a huge part of that. This photo was taken on my last night there, right after the sun had set.

The Capital of Culture initiative highlights the role of culture in building identity and over 300 projects have been organized in Plovdiv. They include festivals, exhibitions, and theater productions. Plovdiv is especially proud of its artwork, and this lion was my absolute favorite!

- Cherry Blossoms and Peace Signs - Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Here is a photo of my friends from Asia University (top row) and me after a day of sitting under the cherry blossoms and sipping on some sake. We asked a stranger to take our photo, and it turned out he was a local high schooler. When he and his friends (bottom row) learned that I was an American student abroad, they really wanted to get a photo together, so we took one big photo together. Here, I'm sporting a WWU T-shirt which doubled as my band uniform when I performed with my AUAP friends at WWU. And of course, no photo taken in Japan is complete without the customary peace signs.

- Description
- This picture was taken in City Bell, Argentina. It is the town that my mother grew up in before moving to the United States at 16. Today we still have family living there and I am pictured with my great aunt Blanca, who I surprised when I showed up at her doorstep after not seeing her for five years. She could not believe I had come all that way to study and live so near to her (I'm an hour train ride away). It was hard to keep the secret since it took months of planning but it was worth it!

- Class 5-3 - Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- For our Japanese Folklore class we took many field trips, including an optional volunteer opportunity at a local elementary school. Unfortunately, I'm unable to post a photo with the children, as I was unable to contact the school for their permission. It was a great experience. The children weren't interested in us because we spoke English, or because we were foreigners. They simply saw us as new friends and as new playmates. Here, I'm pictured with my friend, Keitaro Hanzawa (right), with a warm welcome message full of drawings and comments from the fifth graders that we volunteered with. My favorite part is probably the blue text right under the "W" in "Welcome," since it's just a list of random English words that they knew written in Japanese like "jump" and "magazine."

- Cocos en la playa!
- Date
- 2019-07-05
- Description
- This is a photo of me discovering coconuts on the beach of Playa Uvita. The landmark I was visiting is known as the Uvita Whale Tail because it is a natural outcrop that you can see from space at low tide and it resembles the tail of a whale. It was an amazing time standing in the middle of the whale tail. Waves wash onto the shore from both sides and then when the tide gets high enough, the waves crash into each other and eventually engulf the landmark. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica, if not the entire world. Our program we were studying was Global Entrepreneurship and innovation in the social sector. Our final week was an independent study week and I chose to study the unique market of hostels in Costa Rica, in particular, the Flutterby house located in Uvita ten minutes from where I took this photo. It is a hot spot for tourists to see the landmark and they often stay at the Flutterby house for its nice amenities, cheap surfboard rentals and prime location near some of the best surf on most beautiful beach in the world.

- Don't Underestimate the Power of Nature
- Date
- 2019-07-16
- Description
- This picture was taken during a sailing route between St. Barths and out next destination, after an incredible rain storm. The rain was comparable to buckets of water, and the splashed of salt water were unavoidable. This experience was one that I could truly say felt spiritual as we glided past islands at a time. As soon as the cloud dumped what felt like all the water they could hold, the sun broke through the clouds and my exhausted body for counteracting the nature with our sails, collapsed on the Bow and soaked up the sun. now looking straight up at the mast, the sails were perfectly caught by the wind and the sun was stunningly tucked behind the reaming rain clouds. But in this shot, hides a small little silver lining gradient, and in this single shot, my whole experience seems captured in time.

- Double Rainbow Kitchen Superteam Go! - India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- I spent the summer of 2014 completing a health education internship at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, outside of Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh, India. One of my duties was to create a list of observations and suggestions for the community regarding the improvement of kitchen sanitation. I started my observations by volunteering an extra set of hands to help make dinner for the community. I ended up loving my time with the kitchen staff so much that I was regularly hanging out in the kitchen and peeling potatoes or grinding garlic for thukpa (thick Tibetan-style vegetable noodle soup) several nights a week. This photo is of Sharda, me, Kalu, and Rajiv (left to right), part of the kitchen "superteam" posing in front of a double rainbow outside of the kitchen at Jhamtse Gatsal.

Taken in front of one of the first sights we visited (the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padova, Italy), our guide (who was taking the picture) allowed us to have a little fun with the panorama feature on my camera. - Duomo on a Foggy Morning - Florence, Italy
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Almost every morning for 8 months I would walk past the Duomo in Florence to go to class. The Duomo, a massive Cathedral that looms over the city like a giant fist, casts it's shadow and impression on all that visit Florence. Needless to say, it is hardly ever without tourists surrounding its glistening marble walls. This photo was taken on a foggy morning that I had to wake up at 4 am to catch a bus, and there was not a single other person in Piazza Del Duomo. As I rushed to catch the bus I momentarily looked up to see the giant structure looking back at me. I felt small but peaceful as the shutter from my camera echoed across the stone. It was a moment I will not forget.

- The Edge of Catastrophe - Poas Volcano, Costa Rica
- Date
- 2019-09-14
- Description
- Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

- England v. USA
- Date
- 2018-11-15
- Description
- England v. USA: London, UK - When we think of British culture, soccer (or "football") is often one of the first things that comes to mind. This photo is at Wembley Stadium, which can hold 90,000 people for large events. The game was between my host country of England - "The Three Lions" (who won handily to nobody's surprise) - and the US Men's National Team. This match represented both the culture I'm from and the culture I was living in, through a game that is understood all over the world and transcends geographic and cultural boundaries to bring people together.

- Everything Happens for a Reason - Paris, France
- Date
- 2019
- Description
- This photo was taken when we were on a boat tour along the river through Paris to sight see with my program. As we were passing under bridges and the brick walls along the river, I spotted this spray painted on a wall. "Everything happens for a reason" has always been a motto that I lived by and that was instilled in me from my dad. It's a phrase that reminds me there is something to learn from every situation and to be present in what is happening, right now. When we were on the boat tour and happened to pass this spray painted on a random wall, I was hit with a wave of emotion. Seeing this quote was a reminder to me that my experience abroad is pushing my comfort zone and pushing me further than I thought I could go for a reason. There is truly something new to learn everyday and growth comes from hard times. It was a reminder that I have this opportunity for a reason and to make the most of it.

- My kayak felt so small compared to the Hardangerfjord. With a guide and one friend, we spent a day kayaking one of the furthest inlets of the majestic landscape. When we were making the three-kilometer crossing of the fjord to return to Eidfjord in the evening, the water got completely still and reflected the sharp landscape like a mirror. Of all the incredible things that I did in my year abroad, I don't know if any of them top this quietly epic moment.

- 2019
- Description
- This picture was taken in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The name of this sculpture is "Floralis Generica". At the moment the flower is shown with its petals closed since it is the afternoon, but in the morning the petals open up. This was one of the first works of art I visited in Buenos Aires, little did I know at the moment that there was going to be many more amazing works to explore as well!

- All of the churches I saw and visited in Italy were just absolutely breathtaking. This particular church was so beautiful, and in this photograph, in contrast to the clouds, it was astounding.

- Fuji-san - Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Here we have Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, as seen from a small village called Oshino. One thing that my study abroad advisor told me that really stuck with me was, "Studying is important, but also try to take classes that you can only take in Japan." Japanese Folklore was one of those classes. One weekend, we went on a field trip all the way to Mount Fuji. We had to take a two-hour train ride by ourselves, but after we arrived, our professor had readied three rental cars for us, and he was paying for the rest of the trip. We got to go many places including a local Shinto shrine, the village of Oshino, the Narusawa Ice Caves, Aokigahara, and also Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji was still closed at this point, so we only got to go up halfway, but it was still quite the experience. I've studied a lot about Japanese culture, and I've met many Japanese people prior to my year abroad in Japan, so nothing really surprised me. But it wasn't until the very moment that I took this photo that I finally got a clear look at Mount Fuji with my own eyes; that I finally thought, "Wow, I'm really in Japan."

- Gamcheon Culture Village - Gamcheon Village, South Korea
- Date
- 2019-11-03
- Description
- After taking a small bus through the steep and narrow streets, the views of Gamcheon village are incredible as there are so many small locally owned businesses everywhere. What I found most impactful was the views at night because by nightfall nearly all of the crowds disappear; I thought it was even more beautiful at night with small street lights dimly lighting the now sleepy town overlooking the water.

- There was an abundance of wildflowers in the Himalayas, but this was one of my favorites. In a country surrounded by jaw-dropping landscapes, sometimes it's the little things that can take your breath away. These wildflowers grew everywhere so taking a picture of one at the top of the hill at one of our earlier campsites felt like a no-brainer and I loved how it turned out.

- The Gift of a Second Mother - Ladakh, India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This is a photo of my Ama-le, which means Mother in Ladakhi, the native language I attempted to learn while abroad. Although we did not speak the same language, my Ama-le remained patient, compassionate, and unconditonally generous and loving. She woke up at 5AM every morning and began working in the fields. She did not stop until sunset. I learned many things from this woman, but the potential of human strength was the most evident. The village rests within the Himalaya Mountains at 13,000 feet. The environment is extremely harsh at this elevation, however, the people of Stongdey have managed to sustain their lands with traditional agricultural practices for thousands of years. Brilliant fields of barley, golden wheat, peas, and other fruits color the village.
