Title: That Aha Moment - Berlin, Germany

Description: My family history is deeply tied to the Holocaust and the impact it had on the Ashkenazi Jewish community. I lost an entire branch of my family tree to the Nazi regime... The only surviving members of my family were in the US. My great grandfather, born and raised Jewish, lost his faith in god as he became older because he felt that any god that took his father from him at a young age was no god of his. He married an Italian Catholic woman who was strong and outspoken knew nothing of the Jewish faith but went out of her way to preserve what she could of the family name and faith through food, language, and stories. Think about it, an Italian catholic working woman who spoke Yiddish (Hebrew slang), bore a Austrian Jewish married name with pride, took her kids to catholic church, worked hard to learn all of the family recipes and share them, had the star of David along side the cross, and made sure that her children knew where they came from in the late 1940's and 50's. She made sure that both families were represented in their household, even when she knew that her husband had lost his faith through trying to heal from a great loss. On my study abroad, I made a 24 hour trip to Berlin, on the 30th anniversary of the wall coming down. I made sure to prioritize any holocaust memorial that I could see, and fell into the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the Topography of Terror. At the Jewish Museum I was wandering the main exhibit, a minimal architecture prioritized trance. The building held such impact at expressing the grief and other traumatizing emotions that impacted the community as a whole. In wandering the different axis there was a exhibition room empty, for the first time since the museum opened, being empty one last time before a more permanent exhibit was put in. As I walked through the Libeskind building I had never felt closer to my great grandparents, understood how my popup felt and why he had lost his faith, why my nani took it as her responsibility to preserve our family history. I felt the pain and isolation my popup felt, the anger and resentment he held on to for so long. I felt both of them next to me walking through all of the exhibits comforting me and holding my hand. I lost my popup when I was barely 1 year old and my nani when I was 20. Having both of them there next to me was something unexpected and amazing.

Description: An hour outside camp, our Land Rover sprung a flat tire. We had rolled to a stop mere meters from two young boys standing at the side of the road asking for handouts. A fellow student in our vehicle stepped outside, filled a bottle with water from our supply, and handed it to the older child. The older boy graciously handed it down to the younger, who could not contain his thirst. It is amazing that a simple thing like clean water is such a spectacular thing to many people in this part of the world. Meanwhile, we take it for granted every day. We can find it everywhere, while these young children depend on the generosity of complete strangers to drink healthy water every once in a while.

Description: I planned to snap a picture of my friend from the gate of the Forbidden City with Tiananmen Square in the background. Looking through the viewfinder just about to take the picture, I saw this man in an umbrella hat rise up slowly out of nowhere directly in the center of the frame; I thought it was so funny that I ended up taking a picture of him right there. In China, no one would give much bother trying to stay out of each other's ways in situations like these, rather, people would wait patiently for the brief, brief moments when there were gaps in the crowds to take their pictures. The guy in my photo had just been squatting, taking a few photos of his son off to the left of the picture.

Title: Snacking Vervet Monkey - Tanzania

Description: We drove up to an animal sighting to discover a troop of Vervet monkeys. But this sighting was far from normal. A previous observer had carelessly tossed his sack lunch into the monkey's more than willing hands. We helplessly watched as this Vervet inspected the contents of the bag and settled on a cracker, before continuing to eat every morsel inside. A younger male approached to see what all the fuss was about, and ended up with a small scrap of plastic from the bag itself. This young monkey, having never seen anything like it before, decided to taste the bag. And there was nothing we could do. This moment made me really realize the devastating impact we can have on the beautiful creatures we cohabitate with on this planet. If only we stop and think about our actions, all of them, perhaps we can make a positive change in the world.

Nestled just south of the Julian Alps and an hour north of the capital of Ljubljana, this is the only naturally-occurring island in the country. An imposing castle perched on a rock outcrop overlooking the lake and some good (steep) hiking in the woods coupled with the charming island church solidified Bled as one of my favorite places that I visited. Legend has it that your wishes will come true if you ring the church bell three times...

Developed from 1971-1974, Viking I was the first car designed and built at the Vehicle Research Institute. This vehicle was designed to win the Urban Vehicle Design Competition held at General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan. A unique feature of this car was "extreme Ackerman steering" which allowed the car to be parallel parked in a space only 10″ longer than the car.

Viking I won the maneuverability and parkability awards and finished 3rd overall in the competition behind the University of British Columbia and the University of Florida.

Description: This is a photo of the 7 Rila Lakes. We took a field trip there as part of my Intro to Bulgarian course and spent an entire day marveling at the natural beauty of Bulgaria. I managed to reach all seven lakes during the hike, and after stopping for lunch, my Bulgarian teacher had us sing some Bulgarian folk songs she'd brought. None of us were native speakers and we probably didn't do the songs justice, but other hikers stopped to listen and it was a beautiful song in the spirit of the lakes.

Description: This is a photo of me discovering coconuts on the beach of Playa Uvita. The landmark I was visiting is known as the Uvita Whale Tail because it is a natural outcrop that you can see from space at low tide and it resembles the tail of a whale. It was an amazing time standing in the middle of the whale tail. Waves wash onto the shore from both sides and then when the tide gets high enough, the waves crash into each other and eventually engulf the landmark. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica, if not the entire world. Our program we were studying was Global Entrepreneurship and innovation in the social sector. Our final week was an independent study week and I chose to study the unique market of hostels in Costa Rica, in particular, the Flutterby house located in Uvita ten minutes from where I took this photo. It is a hot spot for tourists to see the landmark and they often stay at the Flutterby house for its nice amenities, cheap surfboard rentals and prime location near some of the best surf on most beautiful beach in the world.

The architecture style was different than any we had seen in Rwanda and there was an eerie stillness in the air as we wondered what it used to be. Description: Next to one of the main plazas of Granada sits the the grand Cathedral. Everyday, come rain or shine, performers were there to greet the tourists and on the weekends church bells rang with joy to celebrate a new marriage. On weekdays students filtered in and out for school tours, and always large masses were held. Engaging with the people in this square was when I finally began to feel that Granada was my home. Eventually, the cathedral became a normal sight to me, and I became more concerned with getting to my favorite churros con chocolate restaurant around the corner and catching an impromptu flamenco show.

Gnawa is an important musical tradition in Morocco, with Gnawan music being played at many of the important festivals and holidays in Morocco. This particular day was right before Aid-el Mawlid, the Muslim holiday celebrating the Prophet Mohammed's birth. I learned to play a certain rhythm and tried to sing the lyrics of the song, which were about Allah, and while I have a long way to go before I am a Gnawa musician, I had fun.

I took this photo before I saw the full temple. The buddha towers over the whole mountain watching anyone who gets close enough to approach. Intimidating but also inspiring.

Description: For our Japanese Folklore class we took many field trips, including an optional volunteer opportunity at a local elementary school. Unfortunately, I'm unable to post a photo with the children, as I was unable to contact the school for their permission. It was a great experience. The children weren't interested in us because we spoke English, or because we were foreigners. They simply saw us as new friends and as new playmates. Here, I'm pictured with my friend, Keitaro Hanzawa (right), with a warm welcome message full of drawings and comments from the fifth graders that we volunteered with. My favorite part is probably the blue text right under the "W" in "Welcome," since it's just a list of random English words that they knew written in Japanese like "jump" and "magazine."

Even up in monasteries and historic sites we visited, cats would be there. This cat, was right outside the old Greek theater at the Oracle of Apollo.

This photo is at Wembley Stadium, which can hold 90,000 people for large events. The game was between my host country of England - "The Three Lions" (who won handily to nobody's surprise) - and the US Men's National Team. This match represented both the culture I'm from and the culture I was living in, through a game that is understood all over the world and transcends geographic and cultural boundaries to bring people together.
