- Flip Breskin oral history (1 of 2)
- Date
- 2005-10-24
- Description
- First of two separate interviews. Ms. Breskin briefly describes her experiences as the first Jewish family on Mercer Island, and how this isolation as a child led her to music. She moved to Bellingham in 1970 at the height of the counter-culture movement and recollects her connections with the South Fork Bluegrass Band. She relates her experiences as one of the founding members of the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, and the various camps and workshops that sprang forth from that, the Sound Acoustic Music Workshop and the California Coast Music Camp for example. Ms. Breskin also discusses the influences she had on the WCHMS, and her thoughts and experiences in the Bellingham folk music scene in general. She explores the impact that musicians like Elizabeth Cotten had on her own folk music experience and her personal connections to other folk artists like Janis Ian, Larry Hanks, Mike Marker, Eric Schoenberg, and Richard Ruskin. She explains her connection to Mama Sundays, now the Underground Coffee House on Western's campus, its history, and its connection to the music scene in Bellingham.

- Laura Smith oral history
- Date
- 2007-02-11
- Description
- Ms. Smith was born in Hawaii in 1947. She recalls that her early exposure to music came from her father playing classical piano and ragtime when she was growing up. Her main musical outlet was choir, and she sang in her church choir through high school. She went to college in Portland, Oregon, and continued to sing there. Ms. Smith recalls her musical influences and interests during those years, including Joan Baez, Mimi Farina, Mark Spoelstra, and Steve Young. She relates how she began playing banjo, and how this led to her playing with Larry Hanks, her husband. She moved to Bellingham in 1979, where she and Larry reconnected with Robert Scholtz and became involved in the WCHMS. As a host, she has sponsored various acts including The Wanderers, Bill Merlin and Carl Allen, the Bird’s Creek Boys, and Sarah Gray. She discusses briefly where she sees the WCHMS headed.

MISS WILSON SPEAKS: Miss Mabel Zoe Wilson, Librarian, came before the Board and explained the system of charging the withdrawal and checking the return of books in the library, and illustrated that it is next to impossible for an error to pass through the compound checking system employed, without detection. The recommendation was adopted by the Board. TRANSPORTATION FOR TRAINING TEACHERS: It was ordered by the Board that the provisions made Oct. 13, 1915, for payment of transportation of student teachers going out to distant schools, be construed to include training teachers accompanying them, as well. It was reported that cigarettes will be sold in the Co-op, on approval of Dr. Haggard. Sale has already been initiated. There was discussion about the possibility of having a card game night or bridge party. Don Packard was delegated to contact the Recreation Committee about such an arrangement. The submitted budgets for 1947-48 were discussed. It was suggested that a note be sent to each department concerning their budget and telling of various recommendations by the Board of Control. Don Packard and Halldor Karason will go over the budgets and list recommendations that were mentioned by the Board. A pie-graph of the overall budget was submitted by Halldor Karason. He estimated on this graph that men's athletics spend about 67% of our total income. Since there was not a quarum present the Board could not officially pass the submitted budgets. This should be done at the next Board of Control meeting. There was some discussion of how we could get better crowds at athletics contests. One idea was that we might ask Bellingham Transit Company to run special busses up to the gym for basketball games. Meeting was adjourned at 6:00. Donna Brown Acting Secretary ##

- Description
- England v. USA: London, UK - When we think of British culture, soccer (or "football") is often one of the first things that comes to mind. This photo is at Wembley Stadium, which can hold 90,000 people for large events. The game was between my host country of England - "The Three Lions" (who won handily to nobody's surprise) - and the US Men's National Team. This match represented both the culture I'm from and the culture I was living in, through a game that is understood all over the world and transcends geographic and cultural boundaries to bring people together.

The Board will contact Mr. Earle in regards to authorizing payment of the cost of the stylebooks. Bill Wilder, President of the Alumni Asoociation, requested from the board a portion of the Co-op dividends. His request was for operating funds for the officers and regional chairman in recruiting students and helping the college. Paul Gillie moved that the board authorize Mr. Earle to write a check for $1,000 to be given to the Alumni Ass. to be used by the officers as they see fit. Seconded and defeated, 1 for, six opposing.
