Description: Our last official evening together as a group landed on the very special evening - Kioni's Paniyiri or town festival. A stage was built, the dancing circle cleared, food prepared, and lots of seating for the bustling, wildly entertaining evening of feasting on great food, dancing with the whole town, and laughing together. It was a wonderful way to say goodbye to the little village that we all fell in love with and to each other, after forming a close-knit bond in a short amount of time.

Description: I knew that when I decided to study abroad in Portugal that a trip to the Azores would be obligatory, as my great-grandparents left these islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean nearly a century ago. I was hit hard by emotions as I stepped off the plane. I was where my ancestors had lived, where they had laughed, where they had loved. I was walking in the same fields they had played in and were buried in. A place that should have seemed unfamiliar was the opposite of that; I was home.

I feel so lucky to have been in Plovdiv in 2019 because this year it is one of the two European Capital's of Culture. The Capital of Culture initiative highlights the role of culture in building identity and over 300 projects have been organized in Plovdiv. They include festivals, exhibitions, and theater productions. Plovdiv is especially proud of its artwork, and this lion was my absolute favorite!

Description: This photo was taken when we were on a boat tour along the river through Paris to sight see with my program. As we were passing under bridges and the brick walls along the river, I spotted this spray painted on a wall. "Everything happens for a reason" has always been a motto that I lived by and that was instilled in me from my dad. It's a phrase that reminds me there is something to learn from every situation and to be present in what is happening, right now. When we were on the boat tour and happened to pass this spray painted on a random wall, I was hit with a wave of emotion. Seeing this quote was a reminder to me that my experience abroad is pushing my comfort zone and pushing me further than I thought I could go for a reason. There is truly something new to learn everyday and growth comes from hard times. It was a reminder that I have this opportunity for a reason and to make the most of it.

Description: This plant is known for medicinal treatment for some cancers to the Moklen. The Moklen are traditionally sea nomadic but now reside on the southern coasts and islands of southeast Asia. Sahmoon prai is the name for these kinds of plants, and much of sahmoon prai grows around the village but look like shrubs and weeds. The Moklen are very connect to the Earth and are known for having generations of knowledge passed down.

Description: This photo captures our group walking along the first mountain pass in the Himalaya Mountains. We traveled along the passes by jeep, van, or travel bus, along slivers of roads meant for compact vehicles, and dodging cliffs and edges the entire ride. The structure on the right of the photo is called a stupa, a symbolic structure within Buddhism, a source of fascination and learning while abroad. Stupas were scattered throughout the land, along mountain passes, roads, and within every village on the Tibetan Plateau.

Description: This photo was taken late afternoon on an exceptionally warm day in Serengeti National Park. A hundred meters from the road lay two large lionesses and a group of seven cubs. When the pair stood to stretch for a moment, every cub pounced on the chance for an afternoon snack. The lions stood in the middle of a large open savanah, a characteristic landscape of the Serengeti. This was the first time we had seen so many cubs in one location with so few adults nearby.

Title: "With An Open Heart" - Leeward Islands

Description: Throughout my experience sailing between the Leeward Islands, I was taken back by not only the density of history we learned aboard, but the intensity of energy on each island that rang true of how powerful the history is and how present it stayed on each island. Islands were in obvious distraught due to recent hurricanes and local lack of funds to recover, but this never shook the smiles on the local communities faces. We were given the chance to hike through volcanoes and work on the farms of local islands and each second spent among these beautiful souls I felt a shift in my own angle on life and the will to pursue my own passions despite all conflicts. The stories and day to day lifelines of each community on their own islands, taught me so much about stepping my foot into the world outside of my own. Too often we are caught in our own bubbles and forget the pleasure of popping that comfort zone and branching out, to whatever degree you can.

At the top, you can get a glimpse of the incredible views of the entire city and it's absolutely amazing. We spent hours taking in the breath taking sights and absorbing the rich and raw history of how this fort came to be and the power and culture it still holds today. On the boat we were taught the history written and portrayed through words, but being on the grounds and exploring the incredible buildings was a lesson all on its own. Words do not compare to emotions you feel when you find yourself engulfed in the modern day historical sites.

The main part of this event, however, was the many hot air balloons that people were able to see up close, some even letting people get aboard for a little bit! I am pictured here in front of a hot air balloon that has "Lujan" written on it, everything here is named after the Lady of Lujan (the patron saint of Argentina), including me!

Description: This shot of Taipei 101. I had been to the top of the tower earlier and to my luck visibility was great. When I descended, the fog started to roll in. Going to Taiwan was my first real time traveling totally by myself and I knew virtually nothing about the country before arriving. This picture was taken after travelling to the very last subway stop with some locals to hike up Elephant Mountain, which provides a killer view of the city. Taipei 101 really dominates the skyline of the city, and that can be seen in this photograph where the top is not even visible due to how high it reaches.

Description: After taking a small bus through the steep and narrow streets, the views of Gamcheon village are incredible as there are so many small locally owned businesses everywhere. What I found most impactful was the views at night because by nightfall nearly all of the crowds disappear; I thought it was even more beautiful at night with small street lights dimly lighting the now sleepy town overlooking the water.

Description: Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

They are essentially folklore-esque monsters played by ordinary people in town, who dress up once a year and go door to door drinking lots of sake and scaring the children into behaving. They also tend to appear in tourist locations as they are somewhat of an icon of Akita. This picture presents my slightly bewildered reaction to encountering one up close.

Description: This photo was taken on a hike through the mountains in Lauterbrunnen. The feeling of insignificance is a very humbling experience and this was one of those moments. When I went to Switzerland I had only been abroad a month and around this time I was going through the normal waves of culture shock where I was starting to miss home. Switzerland was a place that gave me a refresh of home, the smell of fresh air and rain, being surrounded by mountains and complete beauty grounded me. It helped me feel connected to home even though I was far from it. Switzerland holds a special place in my heart because it came when I needed it most. This photo was taken in a moment where I knew I would come back to Switzerland someday. It's unfathomable how mountains and nature that beautiful exist. Although I may have seemed insignificant to the towering mountains, the mountains will always be significant to me.

Description: Upon her realization, an hour into our homestay, that I had brought my camera along, she rushed us out of the hut made entirely of tree branches and goat dung to take pictures of everything she could. But as soon as the camera turned on her, her eyes cast downward, her way of showing modesty and dignity in her Maasai culture. Flies coated her scalp, and her brilliantly-colored clothing was dingy from wear and work, but her joyful spirit was contagious. Description: One of the things I have dreamed of doing since I started studying Japanese was to go Hanami (literally flower viewing). Hanami involves going to the park and sitting under the beautiful cherry blossoms while enjoying food and drinks with friends and family. To me, cherry blossoms are one of the most aesthetically pleasing things to the eyes. Hanami ususally lasts about a week, and it's so big in Japan that they have blooming forecasts so that you can find out when the cherry blossoms are at their peak. It's times like these when I wish I actually had a real camera, as even this photo does not capture the true beauty of the cherry blossoms I saw that day.

Description: Tokyo was an amazing experience for me. The city seemed so developed and alive, while still managing to keep in touch with traditional Japanese culture. I was able to see much more of just a sheer variation of people in Toyko. From businessmen in suits, to guys with crazy spiked orange hair, to girls dressed up like something out of a cartoon. With all of the different shops selling clothes matching each and every different style, Tokyo really seemed like a city where one could be themselves and do what they wanted. It also helped that the weather was wonderful. This particular photo was taken in a more edgy, counter-culture, university age district. As one can see the graffiti and alternative stickers plastered all over the sign. This photo made me realize that despite its size, even a city of 25 million people is a different space to each and every separate person in it. The people make the city, not the other way around.

The Duomo, a massive Cathedral that looms over the city like a giant fist, casts it's shadow and impression on all that visit Florence. Needless to say, it is hardly ever without tourists surrounding its glistening marble walls. This photo was taken on a foggy morning that I had to wake up at 4 am to catch a bus, and there was not a single other person in Piazza Del Duomo. As I rushed to catch the bus I momentarily looked up to see the giant structure looking back at me. I felt small but peaceful as the shutter from my camera echoed across the stone. It was a moment I will not forget.

The most valuable thing I learned from them was that I did not have to seek to discover local culture. Description: This picture was taken during a sailing route between St. Barths and out next destination, after an incredible rain storm. The rain was comparable to buckets of water, and the splashed of salt water were unavoidable. This experience was one that I could truly say felt spiritual as we glided past islands at a time. As soon as the cloud dumped what felt like all the water they could hold, the sun broke through the clouds and my exhausted body for counteracting the nature with our sails, collapsed on the Bow and soaked up the sun. now looking straight up at the mast, the sails were perfectly caught by the wind and the sun was stunningly tucked behind the reaming rain clouds. But in this shot, hides a small little silver lining gradient, and in this single shot, my whole experience seems captured in time.

When moored along the coast line of Saba, the current was so ripping that most of our diving was letting the current take us and simply directing the angle it took you at. This selfie was on a drift dive, so content with letting the ocean's power move my body throughout the dive site. The power you can feel from being surrounded underwater among incredible life, is one that is hard to top. This photo forever captures a feeling in time, that I can never, and will never, forget.

Description: This photo was taken right after the Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community 8th and 9th grade boy's volleyball team, Jhamtse Got Style, found out that they had earned another chance at winning the Lumla volleyball tournament. These boys grew up together at Jhamtse Gatsal, a community, school, and home for over 85 orphaned and abandoned children from the surrounding area, and have been best friends for years. The entire Jhamtse Gatsal community had taken the thirty-minute truck ride to Lumla to watch their team compete, and the boys were overjoyed, though exhausted, to share this victory with their brothers and sisters. As a visitor to this community, it was really striking and joyful to see the community come together to cheer their team on and to celebrate their win.

Fútbol is a prominent sport within Spain but the true beauty of going to a soccer game in Sevilla is the sense of community it brings. At the time I went to the game I had only been abroad for a month and a half and was still learning when it came to my spanish and overall culture, I still felt like an outsider. But coming to a soccer game, hearing the chants and screams of the families in the crowds made everyone rooting for Sevilla in that stadium a family. When we got that goal and the whole stadium erupted, we were all one, we were united.

Our academics were based around the marine ecosystems that we encountered through out daily diving. It seems that it would be hard to study on a boat while sailing island to island, but as you are surrounded by the nature you are so passionate about, it becomes like second nature to want to know more and more. Not only did we learn about specific marine life and global ecosystems, we learned to sail and sustain ourselves on a sail boat for a month. This humbling experience is one that is hard to articulate, but know that I have a smile on my face the whole time I am writing this.

Description: Our guide in the Amazon, Rolando, saw this false scorpion (actually a spider) on the ground and picked it up for us. In the picture, it's sitting on my elbow, while Jeremy looks a little bothered in the background. The Amazon was one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced. It's so beautiful, and feels so peaceful. My time in Ecuador, and especially my time in the Amazon, made me realize how much I want to travel more, and try everything I can (like holding the false scorpion, or eating live beetle larvae at the local village). The trip inspired me to pursue a career abroad, particularly in developing countries like Ecuador.

Description: My family history is deeply tied to the Holocaust and the impact it had on the Ashkenazi Jewish community. I lost an entire branch of my family tree to the Nazi regime... The only surviving members of my family were in the US. My great grandfather, born and raised Jewish, lost his faith in god as he became older because he felt that any god that took his father from him at a young age was no god of his. He married an Italian Catholic woman who was strong and outspoken knew nothing of the Jewish faith but went out of her way to preserve what she could of the family name and faith through food, language, and stories. Think about it, an Italian catholic working woman who spoke Yiddish (Hebrew slang), bore a Austrian Jewish married name with pride, took her kids to catholic church, worked hard to learn all of the family recipes and share them, had the star of David along side the cross, and made sure that her children knew where they came from in the late 1940's and 50's. She made sure that both families were represented in their household, even when she knew that her husband had lost his faith through trying to heal from a great loss. On my study abroad, I made a 24 hour trip to Berlin, on the 30th anniversary of the wall coming down. I made sure to prioritize any holocaust memorial that I could see, and fell into the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the Topography of Terror. At the Jewish Museum I was wandering the main exhibit, a minimal architecture prioritized trance. The building held such impact at expressing the grief and other traumatizing emotions that impacted the community as a whole. In wandering the different axis there was a exhibition room empty, for the first time since the museum opened, being empty one last time before a more permanent exhibit was put in. As I walked through the Libeskind building I had never felt closer to my great grandparents, understood how my popup felt and why he had lost his faith, why my nani took it as her responsibility to preserve our family history. I felt the pain and isolation my popup felt, the anger and resentment he held on to for so long. I felt both of them next to me walking through all of the exhibits comforting me and holding my hand. I lost my popup when I was barely 1 year old and my nani when I was 20. Having both of them there next to me was something unexpected and amazing.

Title: The Miracle of Water - Tanzania

Description: An hour outside camp, our Land Rover sprung a flat tire. We had rolled to a stop mere meters from two young boys standing at the side of the road asking for handouts. A fellow student in our vehicle stepped outside, filled a bottle with water from our supply, and handed it to the older child. The older boy graciously handed it down to the younger, who could not contain his thirst. It is amazing that a simple thing like clean water is such a spectacular thing to many people in this part of the world. Meanwhile, we take it for granted every day. We can find it everywhere, while these young children depend on the generosity of complete strangers to drink healthy water every once in a while.

Description: This is one of the first meals that I had when I arrived in Morocco for the first time. This was the moment when it struck me that I really was in another country, with a completely different culture from mine. Sharing this communal meal of couscous (which was really delicious) with everyone at the table was a new experience for me, a new way of eating food. Despite the cultural differences, I was able to connect to the other people around the table and start to build relationships. It was a beautiful, eye-opening moment for me.

Description: These young monks were playing on a cell phone on a rooftop just outside of the gompa at the Tawang Monastery. Due to its remote location and restricted access for foreigners, the Mon region of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India is one of the last areas in which Tibetan culture remains mostly intact. With the recent construction of a road leading to the nearby border with Bhutan, the region is no longer as isolated and is increasingly open to outside influence. This photo offers an interesting juxtaposition of traditional culture with the products of such globalization.

Description: Here we have Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, as seen from a small village called Oshino. One thing that my study abroad advisor told me that really stuck with me was, "Studying is important, but also try to take classes that you can only take in Japan." Japanese Folklore was one of those classes. One weekend, we went on a field trip all the way to Mount Fuji. We had to take a two-hour train ride by ourselves, but after we arrived, our professor had readied three rental cars for us, and he was paying for the rest of the trip. We got to go many places including a local Shinto shrine, the village of Oshino, the Narusawa Ice Caves, Aokigahara, and also Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji was still closed at this point, so we only got to go up halfway, but it was still quite the experience. I've studied a lot about Japanese culture, and I've met many Japanese people prior to my year abroad in Japan, so nothing really surprised me. But it wasn't until the very moment that I took this photo that I finally got a clear look at Mount Fuji with my own eyes; that I finally thought, "Wow, I'm really in Japan."
