- The Road Goes Ever On
- Date
- 2019-10-04
- Description
- Our classrooms were a bit different from most. Each day was spent hiking anywhere between 6-12 miles and our learning took place outside of a traditional classroom setting. It was fascinating to get to see and experience the cultural, physical and biological processes that we were learning about.

- Jimjil-bangin
- Date
- 2019-10-03
- Description
- We visited a traditional Korean style sauna equipped with everything you could ever need. Often times people can stay in a Jimjilbang for as long as you want as it is seen as a relaxing stay away from the stress of daily life. We had traditional sweet rice drinks, wore matching pajama-style outfits, ate traditional Korean food, and experienced all of the different rooms available which ranged from an ice room to a room that was over 180 degrees Fahrenheit. I will say that after staying at the sauna, I have never felt so relaxed and my skin felt incredible.

- There was an abundance of wildflowers in the Himalayas, but this was one of my favorites. In a country surrounded by jaw-dropping landscapes, sometimes it's the little things that can take your breath away. These wildflowers grew everywhere so taking a picture of one at the top of the hill at one of our earlier campsites felt like a no-brainer and I loved how it turned out.

- Everest?! - Okhaldhunga, Nepal
- Date
- 2019-09-30
- Description
- The rest of the trip feels a little anticlimactic when, on your first full hiking day, you see in the distance the tallest mountain in the world. After seeing Everest, it hit me that I was really there, on the other side of the world, exploring the tallest mountain ranges on the planet. It was an incredibly humbling experience.

- Princess for the Day at Gyeongbukgung Palace
- Date
- 2019-09-28
- Description
- Gyeongbukgung Palace is centered in the heart of the city where visitors can take in the beautiful architecture and scenery of the palace grounds while also being dressed in traditional Korean style hanboks. Being able to walk around such a historic site in such beautiful clothes was such an incredible experience and truly felt like we were experiencing a moment in time of life in the Joseon dynasty.

- Description
- This photo I really liked, even though it wasn't exactly a selfie, because it captures how happy I was to finally be in France. It was the first weekend in the program and I was still trying to get to know people but it really felt like I had bonded with my new friends that weekend and it was where I knew I was going to have a great time here by myself. I liked the background of it as well because you can see the giant beautiful Chateau in the background as well as the gold figures in the fountain. It really captures how incredible that place is.

- Capital of Culture
- Date
- 2019-09-14
- Description
- This photo was taken in Plovdiv, one of the more popular towns in Bulgaria. I feel so lucky to have been in Plovdiv in 2019 because this year it is one of the two European Capital's of Culture. The Capital of Culture initiative highlights the role of culture in building identity and over 300 projects have been organized in Plovdiv. They include festivals, exhibitions, and theater productions. Plovdiv is especially proud of its artwork, and this lion was my absolute favorite!

- Sharing Couscous - Morocco
- Date
- 2019-09-14
- Description
- This is one of the first meals that I had when I arrived in Morocco for the first time. This was the moment when it struck me that I really was in another country, with a completely different culture from mine. Sharing this communal meal of couscous (which was really delicious) with everyone at the table was a new experience for me, a new way of eating food. Despite the cultural differences, I was able to connect to the other people around the table and start to build relationships. It was a beautiful, eye-opening moment for me.

- The Edge of Catastrophe - Poas Volcano, Costa Rica
- Date
- 2019-09-14
- Description
- Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

- Date
- 2019-08-31
- Description
- During Orientation Week, one of the first places they took us was Rila Monastery. Despite being so high up in the mountains, we were still surrounded by trees on all sides and it was an incredibly spiritual spot to visit because you felt so close to the heavens. The architecture and the artwork throughout almost felt unreal. I've seen lots of churches in Bulgaria since then, but Rila Monastery holds a special place in my heart.

- Between the Breaths - Leeward Islands
- Date
- 2019-07-25
- Description
- As a student here at Western I have found myself studying so hard to reach my goal, but abroad I was able to experience the goal I am after and seemingly rejuvenated my passions to find excitement in continuing on with the daily grind. As a SCUBA diver, it's hard to explain the emotions and thoughts you experience while underwater. Alongside the silence comes a quiet mind, or a place to let your thoughts drift off with ease. In this picture we are diving off if the coast lines of Statia, an island within the Leeward Islands, and ventured to an abandoned anchor. The anchor itself was immovable and forever stagnant, but the life around and atop the anchor encouraged you to take slower and deeper breaths, to stay down a little longer. Each dive brought to my attention how much I adore the lifestyle of diving, and how the path I am chugging along, is surely the right path.

- Description
- I took this photo in Phapang, Thailand. This monk is the eldest in the village. He has been seeking Jai Yen or "cool heart" for the last 30 years, and at 89 years, after copious amounts of solitude in the jungle, he says he has found it.

- Description
- This photo was taken at the Avenue of the Baobabs, a sacred stretch of land on the west side of the island. These trees are somewhere from 900-1000 years old. Traditional healers in the area use the bark to make a tea to strengthen bones and give energy.

- Like Wind in My Sails
- Date
- 2019-07-17
- Description
- This photo was taken after an exam aboard a 45 foot catamaran as I was studying marine biology in the caribbean. Our academics were based around the marine ecosystems that we encountered through out daily diving. It seems that it would be hard to study on a boat while sailing island to island, but as you are surrounded by the nature you are so passionate about, it becomes like second nature to want to know more and more. Not only did we learn about specific marine life and global ecosystems, we learned to sail and sustain ourselves on a sail boat for a month. This humbling experience is one that is hard to articulate, but know that I have a smile on my face the whole time I am writing this.

- "With An Open Heart" - Leeward Islands
- Date
- 2019-07-16
- Description
- Throughout my experience sailing between the Leeward Islands, I was taken back by not only the density of history we learned aboard, but the intensity of energy on each island that rang true of how powerful the history is and how present it stayed on each island. Islands were in obvious distraught due to recent hurricanes and local lack of funds to recover, but this never shook the smiles on the local communities faces. We were given the chance to hike through volcanoes and work on the farms of local islands and each second spent among these beautiful souls I felt a shift in my own angle on life and the will to pursue my own passions despite all conflicts. The stories and day to day lifelines of each community on their own islands, taught me so much about stepping my foot into the world outside of my own. Too often we are caught in our own bubbles and forget the pleasure of popping that comfort zone and branching out, to whatever degree you can.

- Through the Arch
- Date
- 2019-07-16
- Description
- This photo was taken at Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, on the island of St. Kitts. We spent hours taking in the breath taking sights and absorbing the rich and raw history of how this fort came to be and the power and culture it still holds today. On the boat we were taught the history written and portrayed through words, but being on the grounds and exploring the incredible buildings was a lesson all on its own. Words do not compare to emotions you feel when you find yourself engulfed in the modern day historical sites.
