Miss Day was absent. The secretary gave a report of the finance of the Student Ass'n. Bal to Aug 3 $271.36 It was moved and carried that the chairman of the board be allowed to have printed 1200 Blue Books. 1920-08-10 - Board of Control Meeting Mr. Pruner called the meeting to order. The roll was taken. Mr. Sorensen absent, Mr. Bond late. Mr. Bond asked that a report of the funds of Student Assn'. and Messenger be given at the next meeting. The meeting adjourned. Oza B. Myers. 1920-08-03 - Board of Control Meeting The meeting was called to order by the president. The roll was taken. Mr. Bond and Miss Day absent. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The following bill was allowed. Griggs Stationary and Printing Co. Typewriting paper $2.00 The meeting adjourned Oza B. Myers. Page 01_091 (volume 01 page 091) 1920-08-17 - It was moved, seconded and carried that the following bills be allowed. Ferrier Magnusson Co. Tennis letters 3.50 A.G Spalding and Bros. Jerseys and Elbow pads 36.03 The meeting adjourned Oza B. Myers 1920-08-19 - Special Board Meeting Meeting called to order by the president. Roll taken. Mr. Bond late. Business Manager's salary for the month of Aug. Action taken that the Business Manager's salary be the same as preceding month's which was $40. It was moved that the Business Manager be allowed to continue his work through the first quarter. If the deficit is not materially reduced during that time with prospects of clearing it up by X-mas, the Business Manager will be asked to resign. The Business Manager will be informed to that affect. Mr. Baughman borrowed $2000 in $1000 notes. The first for 60 days and second for 30 days. It was moved and carried to retain the same sized Messenger as it has been. The meeting adjourned. Oza B. Myers. ##

It was moved, seconded and carried that the board allow the next issue and the issue after Christmas of the Messenger to be cut down to only four pages. Moved that the president be allowed Page 01_097 (volume 01 page 097) 1920-12-07 - to appoint such help as she sees fit to use, to look after the Christmas program. Adjournment Bernice Day, Sect'y ~~~~1920-12-14 - Board of Control Meeting. The meeting was called to order by the president. Mr. Pruner wand Mr. Erickson absent. It was moved, seconded and carried that the sum of forty-nine ($49) dollars be allowed to purchase the archery set, ten dollars ($10) for the target and thirty-nine dollars ($39) for four bows and twelve arrows. Moved, seconded and carried that Clinton Pruner be selected as Santa Claus for the Christmas program. Mr. Bousher's salary for the month of December amounting to forty dollars, ($40) was allowed. A general discussion of the Christmas program followed. Moved, seconded and carried that we adjourn. Bernice A. Day, Sect'y 1920-12-21 - Board of Control Meeting. The meeting was called to order by the president. The minutes of the last two meetings were read and approved. Mr. Erickson was late. It was announced that Dr. Nash had consented to be Santa Claus for our Christmas program. The following bills were allowed: Car tickets for editor of Messenger $1.00 Union Printing Co., for printing of Messenger $200.00 Pacific Steam Laundry for curtains .35 Mr. Ericson for crepe paper and bells 1.60 It was moved, seconded and carried that Mr. Carver be allowed a requisition to buy two dozen pairs of basketball stockings at $3.60 doz. postage .28 Moved that the janitor be given direct charge of the Christmas tree lists and decorations and that they be used only when a requisition be secured from the registrar. Seconded and carried. Roll was called. Mr. Pruner late. the minutes of the previous meeting were read and corrections made. It was suggested to have the tickets for the Mt. Baker trip on sale at the Co-op. It was moved seconded and carried that the president of the Student Association be empowered to make suitable arrangements for the Mt. Baker trip. Meeting adjourned. Oza B. Myers 1920-07-13 - Board of Control Meeting The meeting was called to order by the president. Role was called. Mr. Pruner late. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. It was moved and seconded that the following bills be allowed. Page 01_087 (volume 01 page 087) 1920-07-13 - Northwest Hardware Co. baseball caps and bats $9.70 Normal Book Store 1 1/2 doz. tennis balls 8.10 Owen Market Grocery Mixer 74.90 It was suggested by Mr. Bond to hire someone to move the table and all other necessary articles for the mixer in the future. It was moved and seconded that the chairman be allowed to draw $6.35 to cover the expense for the Mt. Baker trip. Myers. 1920-07-20 - Board of Control Meeting The meeting was called to order by the president. The roll was called all present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. It was suggested by Mr. Bond that the president in giving his report of the Mt. Baker trip include the price of the tickets and the number of students who went. Since it is not the business of the Board of Control to look after the affairs of the Messenger it was suggested to leave those matters with the Editor and Business Manager and if it is necessary to reduce the Messenger for several copies. It is then the duty of the Business Manager to present the matter before the Board. It was suggested by Mr. Bond Page 01_088 (volume 01 page 088) 1920-07-20 - that Mr. Boucher (the business manager of the Messenger) present the final conditions of the Messenger to the Board at the next regular meeting. It was moved that instead of publishing four issues that we publish three and that the senior class be given the issue next to the last wk of school as there is to be no paper the last wk of school and that the manager's salary be reduced 1/4 and that the senior class to be asked to pay the net price. Meeting adjourned O.B.M. 1920-07-27 - Mr. Bond moved that Miss Huston bill for car fare be recommended and carried to allow the Business Manager and editor of the Messenger to buy a car ticket book but limiting them to 4 trips a wk. to the printing office. It was moved and seconded that the Business Manager be empowered to cut down the paper to a four pages issue during the remainder of the summer. The following bills were allowed. Mr. Bond, Mr. Heckman, Miss Bond and Miss Day present. The following people were appointed by the board to fill vacancies for the summer session of 1920: Harry D. Day Acting Sec'y Page 01_084 (volume 01 page 084) 1920-06-22 - Board of Control Meeting Meeting called to order by the president. Minutes read and correction made. A report was given by the president in regard to the excursion to Mt. Baker. The rates would be $2.54 for 250 students. July 17 was decided to be the day for the excursion. It was suggested that the president see Mr. Selby again to try to get lower rates also for 1920-06-08 - the secretary. Motion made and carried to have the school mixer Friday June 25. Motion made carried for the president to find out the expense for a trip to Glacier and the number of students who would go. Meeting adjourned Oza B. Myers, Sec. Summer Term 1920-06-15 - Board of Control Meeting. Meeting called to order by the president. Mr. Bond absent. Moved and carried to have a take off on the faculty. The president appointed Miss Day and Miss McClelland and Mr. Pruner as the committee for the take off. Meeting adjourned. Oza B. Myers. The president gave the second to the rates for the Mt. Baker trip. $2.35 + 8% war tax which made the fare $2.54. It was suggested that the pres. find the number of students who would be willing to pay 2 00/100 for this trip, the student association paying the 54 cents. It was moved and seconded that Mr. Pruner and Mr. Grady be paid the sum of $2 each for janitor work done after the mixer. The following bills were allowed. Moved Mr. Baughman's salary be revised $300 for himself and $200 for his help. Amendment that $400 increase for Mr. Baughman and $100 for his help and to secure such additional help as he may need. Discussion of possibility of school picnic. Moved that the president appoint a committee of one to see Dr. Nash and the President of the Senior class to determine whether or not the Seniors would be willing to combine in a picnic with the entire school. Amendment suggested that we would not wish to interfere with or upset the plans of the Senior class. Motion as above carried. Consideration of the suggestion left by the old board that the allotment of that position of the student activity fee which is for athletics be raised to 75 cents, and the Messenger allotment be lowered to 40 cents. Mr. Sutherlen, of the same co., gave a report concerning this matter. Moved, seconded and carried that a special meeting be called on the following day to make further decision as to the printing of the Messenger for the following year. Adjournment. Bernice A Day Acting sec't. 1920-09-17 - Board of Control Meeting. Meeting called to order by the president. Miss Ingalls absent. Mr. Bowsher presented the card from Mr. Southerlen showing that the Irish Printing Co. is not on the unfair list of the Labor Council. Moved, seconded and carried that four copies of the Messenger be published each month. Mr. Hansen was allowed the editorship of the Messenger until a permanent editor is secured. The meeting was called to order by the president. The minutes of the last two meetings were read and approved. It was decided that the date of the marathon will be changed to April 30th. It was moved, seconded, and carried that Mr. Baughman be offered a one (1) year contract at two hundred dollars ($200) per month. Mr. Oslager made a report from the general and athletics funds for January, February and March. Adjournment Mrs. Edna Anstett Sec'y. 1921-04-12 - Board of Control Meeting. The meeting was called to order by the president. Miss Ingalls, Mr. Bond and Mr. Loring were tardy. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. It was moved and seconded that this contract be signed by the President and the Secretary of the Board. Carried. After dinner the business of the Board was taken up- following adjournment we all went down to the beach to toast marshmallows and sing songs until time to go home. 1921-08-16 - Board of Control Meeting. The meeting was called to order by the President. Roll call- Mr. Huske absent. The Messenger report on its finances was submitted and read. The total indebtedness now existing is 423-. Mr Baughman submitted a statement on the finances of the Normal Book Store. Motion was made and carried that these two statements be accepted. Motion was made and carried that the Editor of the Messenger be allowed to edit an eight page edition for the last number providing it be printed and delivered on Thursday afternoon or before nine o'clock Friday morning. Otherwise no edition shall be published this week. Moved and seconded that Herbert Hansen (Business manager of the Messenger) be allowed thirty dollars ($30.00) for his salary for the month of August, provided he called all bills and lose up all the business of the summer. Carried. It has been decided that a special business meeting will be called for the Thursday room. Aug 18th and that Mr. Carver be requested to be present. Adjournment, Mrs. Edna Anstett-Sec'y 1921-08-18 - Special Board of Control Meeting Meeting called to order by President. Mr. Haeske and Miss Collier absent. Minutes of the two previous meetings read and approved. A letter from the Business Manager of the Messenger (Herbert Hansen) stating his reasons for requesting forty dollars ($40.00) for his salary for the month of august was received and read. Discussion Page 01_116 (volume 01 page 116) 1921-08-18 - Motion was made and carried that we reconsider the motion made August 16th in regard to Herbert Hansen's salary, and allow him forty dollars ($40.00). A report on the finances of the general fund of the Student's Association was submitted by the Secretary. Discussion thereof. Corrections and revisions for the B. Book for 1921-1922 have been received from Dr. Nash, Dean Woodard and Miss Wilson. Plans for its publication were discussed. It was moved and seconded that the apportionment for 1921-22 be made fifty-fifty. Fifty carried. (Mr. Carver was not present to discuss this matter). It has been recommended that financial reports, from all departments in the school, related to the Student's Association, be submitted to the Board of Control each month. Adjournment. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Miss Brannick was appointed Editor of the Messenger for the Winter Quarter , upon recommendation of Miss Edens. The motion was made and carried that Mr. Haeske interview Dr. Nash in view of obtaining Tuesday evening December 20th as the date for the Christmas Tree Exercises. Miss Cook was appointed chairman of the Program Committee and was instructed to plan with Mr. Rahskapf and Mrs. Thatcher for the program. Mrs. Anstett was appointed chairman of the Decorating Committee. Mr. Heckman was appointed Chairman of the Tree Committee. Mr. Hall was instructed to purchase enough candy canes to distribute among the students, Dec. 20th. Mr. Bristol submitted a statement of the financial status of the Messenger of November. It was accepted. The motion was made and carried that Mr. Bristol be allowed $40.00 for his salary for November: and $1.00 for cartickets. Adjournment 1921-02-21 - Board of Control Meeting. A special meeting of the board was called for Monday, Fed. 21. Two hundred sixty-three dollars and ninety-three cents ($262.93) was transferred from the athletic fund to the general fund of the students' association. It was moved, seconded and carried that one hundred sixty-five dollars ($165) be paid for expenses of the debate teams, from the general fund of the students' association. The accounts of the financial matters of the debate teams was approved by the Board of Control. Page 01_102 (volume 01 page 102) 1921-03-01 - A Klipsun bill of eighteen dollars and fifty-nine cents ($19.59) for debate and Board of Control pictures was allowed. Mr. Carver handed in a report of the Whatcom-Normal and Normal-Fairhaven basketball games which was approved. Eighty-seven dollars and forty cents ($87.40) was turned over to the Registrar from the last Normal-Whatcom game. A check of two hundred dollars ($200) for the trip of the basket-ball boys to Cheney was allowed. The following Messenger bills were allowed: Union Printing Co. for printing of Messenger $300.00 Mr. Bousher's salary 40.00 U. S. post office for mailing of Messenger 5.00 A general discussion of the election for next year's Board of Control officers followed. Adjournment 1921-03-15 - Board of Control Meeting. The meeting was called to order by the president. Mr. Loring and Mrs. Anstett were appointed to fill the vacancies of Mr. Pruner and Miss Day who were forced to resigned on account of teaching during the noon hour. It was moved, seconded and carried that the managers of the different funds be appointed to audit books and make a report to be published in the Messenger. It was moved that the annual Marathon be held April 16. Seconded and carried. It was moved seconded and carried that we rent a typewriter to be used until the spring commencement. A bill of twenty cents ($.20) was allowed to Herbert Hansen for stamps. Page 01_103 (volume 01 page 103) 1921-03-15 - It was moved, seconded and carried that debate letters for both teams be secured at the same time of the athletic letters. Adjournment Bernice A. It was moved, seconded, and carried that the bill for basket-ball team panels A.B.C grouping above, and for that of Coach Carver, amounting to thirty-one dollars and forty-five cents ($31.45) be allowed. It was moved, seconded and carried that the treasurers of the different funds be made a permanent auditing committee. It was moved, seconded and carried that the president find out definitely the amount to be paid for the rent of the typewriter and that that amount be paid. Mr. Baughman made a report on his "dead stock", "profits on books", "decline in price of certain articles", "reduction or increase of stock" etc. It was moved, seconded carried that the Board recommend Mr. Baughman's plan of allowing prices to extend downward, rather than to increase his profits. Roll taken-those present were Carol Haeski, vice-president, Mr. Bond and Mr. Heckman, faculty representatives, Miss Collier, Miss Cook and Mrs. Anstett, student representatives. Miss Minor, President, will be absent for the remainder of the year and in compliance with Section I of Article II of the Constitution of Board of Control for Students Page 01_107 (volume 01 page 107) 1921-05-04 - Association. Mr. Haeske will act as chairman during the President's absence. All of the forgoing persons mentioned in these minutes constitute the Board of Control for 1921-22. It was moved and seconded that two hundred dollars ($200.00 be transferred from the Athletic Fund to the Messenger fund. Carried. Arthur Barasher's salary as business manager of the Messenger for April , amount forty dollars ($40.00) was allowed. The following bills were allowed: 1. S. E. Plans for the annual school picnic were discussed. Moved, seconded and carried that Miss Cook and Miss Collier confer with Mr. Caughlin in regard to the Sucia Island trip for the science students and to see if arrangements can be made to have the school picnic at the same time. Adjournment Mrs. Edna Anstett , acting sec'y 1921-05-10 - Board of Control Meeting 1. Meeting called to order by the Vice-President. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. Roll Taken. All present. 2. Committee on the annual school picnic reported that they had obtained a date for the picnic , Monday, May 23, but had been unable to charter a boat to convey the students to Sucia Island. Moved, seconded and carried that the committee on the annual school picnic continue and that as soon as arrangements are made about the boat, a special board meeting be called. 3. Moved and seconded that the matter of Herbert Hansen's application for Business Manager of the Messenger for next year be deferred until later. Carried. 5. Eugene Bowsher gave a report on the financial condition of the Messenger. $1027 am't of debt 497 Reported on hand $530 Deficient It was suggested that Mr. Bowsher find out what saving could be made if the Messenger was cut down to six pages and that he increase the advertisements if possible in order to eliminate the debt. 6. Moved and seconded that the matter of Mr. Bowsher's application for Business Manager of the Messenger for Page 01_109 (volume 01 page 109) 1921-05-10 - the summer term be deferred until next meeting. Carried. 7. Moved, seconded and carried that the $200 (two hundred dollars) voted from the athletic fund to the Messenger fund be used to defray the debt owed to the Union Printing Co. Adjournment, Mrs. Edna Anstett , Sec'y 1921-05-17 - Board of Control Meeting Meeting called to order by the Vice-President. Minutes of last meeting read and approved. All present. Committee on the school picnic reported that they had been unsuccessful in obtaining a boat for the Sucia Island trip. It was moved and seconded that the matter of having the school picnic at Birch Bay be brought up in Assembly to find out how many persons would go at a cost not exceeding fifty , cents (.50). Carried. Mr. Bowsher reported that for a six page Messenger the cost would be $57.50. It was moved and seconded that the Messenger be reduced to a six-page issue beginning now and lasting thru the summer session. Carried. Moved, seconded and carried that we meet tomorrow at 12:30 to finish the business before the Board. Adjournment, Mrs. Edna Anstett, Sec'y 1921-05-18 - Special Board of Control Meeting Meeting called to order by the Vice-President. Riwash , trips to park 4.50 Moved and seconded that Herbert Hanson be appointed Business Manager of the Messenger for the summer term (1921) and for the following school year (Sept. 1921 thru May 1922) at a salary of forty dollars ($40.00) per month. Carried. Esther Cook was appointed to go to see Miss Edens in regard to recommendations for Editor of the Messenger for the summer term.
