Caption on front in ink: "Chuckanut Sandstone" and "Amsden Clark & Co. Fairhaven." Chunks of sandstone are strewn in front of them. Captain Henry Roeder began operating the sandstone quarry in 1857. It lasted until 1908. Among the buildings built in Bellingham from the quarry's sandstone were/are the Bellingham Bay National Bank, the Roth Apartments, the second Whatcom County Courthouse, the Armory.

A page taken from a book showing the Fairhaven Hotel. Caption on front: "'The Fairhaven' Completed September, 1890" The ornate hotel in its prime. First National Bank is in the southwest corner, ground level. Men, women and children stroll on Harris Avenue. A horse drawn carriage is at each entrance, one on Harris the other on 12th Street.

Caption on front in ink: "Chicago House - Whatcom W.T. - Mrs. O.C.Kelly Prop." and "76/C" A narrow two story clapboard building on pilings with six windows on the side on the second story. Three windows are across the front second story. A sign hung in front says Chicago Hotel. Eleven men are sitting or standing on the front and side decks. Other buildings on pilings are visible in the middle ground and trees and houses can be seen in the background. Chicago Hotel was located on C Street between 13th and 14th (now Holly and Astor) Identical to photo gb3697 but not as clear.

Back caption: "Division Street, Whatcom, after fire of 1885," and "Colony Mill to right. Whatcom Falls - upper center right. Little old millhouse to right of falls." Division Street was an alley between "C" and "D" streets. The fire occurred on May 20, 1885, starting in a shed behind Steinweg's Store at the corner of Astor and "C" Streets. 17 buildings were destroyed. A sign on one building reads "Smith & Parsons Hardware, Stoves, Tinware, Glassware & Crockery." Adjacent to the hardware store is a one selling "Sash, Doors, Paints & Oils." Smith & Parsons were in business in Whatcom in 1883. By 1888, Parsons was gone and only Smith remained in the hardware business.

Note attached: "Extra. The first Bellingham Hotel was built in a settlement north of Fairhaven. This was the first place called Bellingham. It was expected by the builders that the Northern Pacific Railroad would make their terminus on Bellingham Bay. The Bellingham town site was purchased by Nelson Bennett in 1888 and was added to Fairhaven."
