Description
-
This photo was taken at the Avenue of the Baobabs, a sacred stretch of land on the west side of the island. These trees are somewhere from 900-1000 years old. Traditional healers in the area use the bark to make a tea to strengthen bones and give energy.

Last Sunrise over the City
-
Date
-
2019-11-04
-
Description
-
This was taken on the morning before I left to come back to the United States. The sunrise over the vast city nestled in the valley of the Himalayas was an image I'll never forget, so I wanted to carry proof that I was there. I didn't take a lot of selfie's on this trip (spending 30 days in a tent without running water will make the prospect less exciting) but here was a place I knew I would return to.

Window - Cappadocia, Turkey
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken in Cappadocia, Turkey, home to perhaps the largest underground city in the world, home and hiding place to some of the first Christians. Their structures were reminiscent of ant hills. This particular picture was taken in a "castle", built into a hillside, it had a watch tower/window that required a precarious climb up a crumbling staircase as well as multiple churches in its core.

Lunchtime in the Serengeti - Tanzania
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken late afternoon on an exceptionally warm day in Serengeti National Park. A hundred meters from the road lay two large lionesses and a group of seven cubs. When the pair stood to stretch for a moment, every cub pounced on the chance for an afternoon snack. The lions stood in the middle of a large open savanah, a characteristic landscape of the Serengeti. This was the first time we had seen so many cubs in one location with so few adults nearby.

Taipei 101

Description
-
This shot of Taipei 101. I had been to the top of the tower earlier and to my luck visibility was great. When I descended, the fog started to roll in. Going to Taiwan was my first real time traveling totally by myself and I knew virtually nothing about the country before arriving. This picture was taken after travelling to the very last subway stop with some locals to hike up Elephant Mountain, which provides a killer view of the city. Taipei 101 really dominates the skyline of the city, and that can be seen in this photograph where the top is not even visible due to how high it reaches.

Plaza Mayor at Night - Salamanca, Spain
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This was taken in Salamanca, Spain, where we did our studying. This is in the plaza mayor at night, when all the lights were turned on. This was single-handedly the most important place in our trip because this was the place where you met up with people if you had to go somewhere, where you went to hang out if it was too hot in the dorms, where you went to grab a quick tapa and vino after or before dinner, and also, when the world cup was going on, they brought out TVs so the whole community could watch the world cup together. This is Salamanca.

Gamcheon Culture Village - Gamcheon Village, South Korea
-
Date
-
2019-11-03
-
Description
-
After taking a small bus through the steep and narrow streets, the views of Gamcheon village are incredible as there are so many small locally owned businesses everywhere. What I found most impactful was the views at night because by nightfall nearly all of the crowds disappear; I thought it was even more beautiful at night with small street lights dimly lighting the now sleepy town overlooking the water.

Magical Realism - Paris, France
-
Date
-

Description
-
The Dali museum was my favorite museum in Paris. It's located in Montmartre, which is personally the coolest area of Paris, and it is a tiny museum with Dali's best works of art. The melting clocks were basically everywhere on his works of art and I loved it so much it really inspired me more than I thought it would. He has such a way with Magical Realism and it really shows in all of his art pieces. He was also very ahead of his time and his work was very satirical to me which was inspiring. I have always had a tougher time connecting with art but all of his work really got me.

By the Ming Tombs - China

Description

This photo was taken at the Ming Tombs near Beijing China, very close to a section of the Great Wall of China. The entire area is scattered with burial grounds of Ming Dynasty Emperors. To try and stay cool in the summer heat I chose to sport my shirt from Western Washington University's intramural sports competitions.

Namahage-san?? - Japan
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
The Namahage are a local tradition in Akita Prefecture. They are essentially folklore-esque monsters played by ordinary people in town, who dress up once a year and go door to door drinking lots of sake and scaring the children into behaving. They also tend to appear in tourist locations as they are somewhat of an icon of Akita. This picture presents my slightly bewildered reaction to encountering one up close.

Phang Nga - Thailand

Description

This is Yai Jem, a Thai grandma who inspired me in many ways. Despite losing much of her and her husbands belongings in a tsunami in 2004, she was constantly making sure I was fed, OK, happy, whatever I needed she made sure I had three. I felt the love she had to share with those around her, she did this for everyone, she made sure everyone had their food before she helped herself.

Between the Breaths - Leeward Islands
-
Date
-
2019-07-25
-
Description
-
As a student here at Western I have found myself studying so hard to reach my goal, but abroad I was able to experience the goal I am after and seemingly rejuvenated my passions to find excitement in continuing on with the daily grind. As a SCUBA diver, it's hard to explain the emotions and thoughts you experience while underwater. Alongside the silence comes a quiet mind, or a place to let your thoughts drift off with ease. In this picture we are diving off if the coast lines of Statia, an island within the Leeward Islands, and ventured to an abandoned anchor. The anchor itself was immovable and forever stagnant, but the life around and atop the anchor encouraged you to take slower and deeper breaths, to stay down a little longer. Each dive brought to my attention how much I adore the lifestyle of diving, and how the path I am chugging along, is surely the right path.

Fuji-san - Japan
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
Here we have Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, as seen from a small village called Oshino. One thing that my study abroad advisor told me that really stuck with me was, "Studying is important, but also try to take classes that you can only take in Japan." Japanese Folklore was one of those classes. One weekend, we went on a field trip all the way to Mount Fuji. We had to take a two-hour train ride by ourselves, but after we arrived, our professor had readied three rental cars for us, and he was paying for the rest of the trip. We got to go many places including a local Shinto shrine, the village of Oshino, the Narusawa Ice Caves, Aokigahara, and also Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji was still closed at this point, so we only got to go up halfway, but it was still quite the experience. I've studied a lot about Japanese culture, and I've met many Japanese people prior to my year abroad in Japan, so nothing really surprised me. But it wasn't until the very moment that I took this photo that I finally got a clear look at Mount Fuji with my own eyes; that I finally thought, "Wow, I'm really in Japan."

That Aha Moment - Greece
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
During our trip to Greece we stopped at this bridge just for fun. The bridge was a piece of history from the ottoman period. Bridges like these and many more exist in Greece as sites any passerby can look at and enjoy. It was incredible to be able to stop by and visit these rich and beautiful landmarks with my study abroad group, taking it all in.

Ferria de los Flores - Medellín, Antioquia

Description

When I first arrived in Medellín, I learned that the city was in the middle of its annual flower festival, Ferria de los Flores. On the final day of the festival, the streets of downtown were blocked off to host the outgoing parade. Every participant that passed us was adorned with spectacular flower arrangements. I suppose I shouldn’t have expected anything less from the City of Eternal Spring!

Of course it's been one of my dreams to go to where Lizzie McGuire performed in her movie. Although I didn't go inside (do you really think I could afford a $30 hiking tour?), it was amazing to be in its presence and to see all of the history in Rome.

Kay y la Puesta del Sol - Morocco
-
Date
-

-
Description
-
After racing through the desert in the back of an old, worn in Jeep with our guide blasting Jay-Z through a wired in mp3 player, we stopped to watch the sunset. Our guides were taking a moment to make their evening prayers while my friends and I were taking a moment to realize what an adventure we were having. Kay jumped. The photo was snapped. Pure joy and bliss and comfort. I will never stop exploring. I will never stop seeing. I will never stop experiencing.
