"With An Open Heart" - Leeward Islands
-
Date
-
2019-07-16
-
Description
-
Throughout my experience sailing between the Leeward Islands, I was taken back by not only the density of history we learned aboard, but the intensity of energy on each island that rang true of how powerful the history is and how present it stayed on each island. Islands were in obvious distraught due to recent hurricanes and local lack of funds to recover, but this never shook the smiles on the local communities faces. We were given the chance to hike through volcanoes and work on the farms of local islands and each second spent among these beautiful souls I felt a shift in my own angle on life and the will to pursue my own passions despite all conflicts. The stories and day to day lifelines of each community on their own islands, taught me so much about stepping my foot into the world outside of my own. Too often we are caught in our own bubbles and forget the pleasure of popping that comfort zone and branching out, to whatever degree you can.

-
Description
-
Gyeongbukgung Palace is centered in the heart of the city where visitors can take in the beautiful architecture and scenery of the palace grounds while also being dressed in traditional Korean style hanboks. Being able to walk around such a historic site in such beautiful clothes was such an incredible experience and truly felt like we were experiencing a moment in time of life in the Joseon dynasty.

Last Sunrise over the City
-
Date
-
2019-11-04
-
Description
-
This was taken on the morning before I left to come back to the United States. The sunrise over the vast city nestled in the valley of the Himalayas was an image I'll never forget, so I wanted to carry proof that I was there. I didn't take a lot of selfie's on this trip (spending 30 days in a tent without running water will make the prospect less exciting) but here was a place I knew I would return to.

Window - Cappadocia, Turkey
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken in Cappadocia, Turkey, home to perhaps the largest underground city in the world, home and hiding place to some of the first Christians. Their structures were reminiscent of ant hills. This particular picture was taken in a "castle", built into a hillside, it had a watch tower/window that required a precarious climb up a crumbling staircase as well as multiple churches in its core.

Plaza Mayor at Night - Salamanca, Spain
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This was taken in Salamanca, Spain, where we did our studying. This is in the plaza mayor at night, when all the lights were turned on. This was single-handedly the most important place in our trip because this was the place where you met up with people if you had to go somewhere, where you went to hang out if it was too hot in the dorms, where you went to grab a quick tapa and vino after or before dinner, and also, when the world cup was going on, they brought out TVs so the whole community could watch the world cup together. This is Salamanca.

Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
Inwangsan, a mountain area where you can hike alongside a portion of the 18.6 km long wall that was built to protect the city from invaders back in 1396. At the top, you can get a glimpse of the incredible views of the entire city and it's absolutely amazing. As hiking culture in Korea is very prominent, locals as well as tourists, can always appreciate the incredible landscape and scenery of such a historically and culturally rich city.

They say experience is the best teacher. That's why I let our guide put a spider, one of many Amazonian species we were learning about on a night walk, on me. They can't say I wasn't trying to learn!

Through the Arch
-
Date

Description
-
This photo was taken at Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, on the island of St. Kitts. We spent hours taking in the breath taking sights and absorbing the rich and raw history of how this fort came to be and the power and culture it still holds today. On the boat we were taught the history written and portrayed through words, but being on the grounds and exploring the incredible buildings was a lesson all on its own. Words do not compare to emotions you feel when you find yourself engulfed in the modern day historical sites.
