Like Wind in My Sails

Description

This photo was taken after an exam aboard a 45 foot catamaran as I was studying marine biology in the caribbean. Our academics were based around the marine ecosystems that we encountered through out daily diving. It seems that it would be hard to study on a boat while sailing island to island, but as you are surrounded by the nature you are so passionate about, it becomes like second nature to want to know more and more. Not only did we learn about specific marine life and global ecosystems, we learned to sail and sustain ourselves on a sail boat for a month. This humbling experience is one that is hard to articulate, but know that I have a smile on my face the whole time I am writing this.

Mushroom Rock at Balandra Beach - Mexico
-
Date
-

-
Description
-
For the faculty-led trip to La Paz, Mexico our group took a trip to Balandra beach. There it has beautiful white sandy beaches as well as the iconic "mushroom rock." The story goes that someone knocked off the top of the rock and then the government paid to cement it back on so that it wouldn't fall off again.

Taken by the Current - Caribbean Sea
-
Date

Description
-
Off of the boat within the Caribbean Sea, we did a handful of diving. When moored along the coast line of Saba, the current was so ripping that most of our diving was letting the current take us and simply directing the angle it took you at. This selfie was on a drift dive, so content with letting the ocean's power move my body throughout the dive site. The power you can feel from being surrounded underwater among incredible life, is one that is hard to top. This photo forever captures a feeling in time, that I can never, and will never, forget.

Solo Trip

Description

This photo was taken on my solo trip to Switzerland. I had spent the entire weekend walking around Geneva and traveling on my own without people and it was something I had never done before, which was very exciting. I had a really great time walking around and exploring on my own and snapping photos along the way. This one was taken moments before a downpour that I got caught in but I liked it because the water is so blue and the lighthouse in the middle is a great eye-catcher.

Being able to see the famous endemic species of the Galapagos in person was a privilege. Part of the privilege is respecting the wildlife in its environment. When this blue-footed booby glared at me, I knew my photography time was done.

7 Rila Lakes Field Trip
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
This is a photo of the 7 Rila Lakes. We took a field trip there as part of my Intro to Bulgarian course and spent an entire day marveling at the natural beauty of Bulgaria. I managed to reach all seven lakes during the hike, and after stopping for lunch, my Bulgarian teacher had us sing some Bulgarian folk songs she'd brought. None of us were native speakers and we probably didn't do the songs justice, but other hikers stopped to listen and it was a beautiful song in the spirit of the lakes.

Cocos en la playa!
-
Date
-

Description
-
This is a photo of me discovering coconuts on the beach of Playa Uvita. The landmark I was visiting is known as the Uvita Whale Tail because it is a natural outcrop that you can see from space at low tide and it resembles the tail of a whale. It was an amazing time standing in the middle of the whale tail. Waves wash onto the shore from both sides and then when the tide gets high enough, the waves crash into each other and eventually engulf the landmark. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica, if not the entire world. Our program we were studying was Global Entrepreneurship and innovation in the social sector. Our final week was an independent study week and I chose to study the unique market of hostels in Costa Rica, in particular, the Flutterby house located in Uvita ten minutes from where I took this photo. It is a hot spot for tourists to see the landmark and they often stay at the Flutterby house for its nice amenities, cheap surfboard rentals and prime location near some of the best surf on most beautiful beach in the world.
