This photo was taken as I was inside of a Strangled Fig tree that had taken over the host tree and left a hollow inside.

Description: While on a small weekend trip, I had the chance to visit the Cloud forests of Monteverde. This is a really special place because there are not many cloud forests left in the world today. I am grateful that I got the chance to see this one, especially from the hanging bridges above the canopy. I am proud as a Viking to support the environment, even in other countries.

Description: This photo was taken while I was discussing with these men how modern fishing practices has greatly affect the Moklen culture and their consumerism. They spend 5 hours in the heat of the day making replacement squid traps because others are ran over by big vessels or stolen by smaller fishing boats. This is a time consuming job that take focus away from other traditions that are also being affected by globalization.

After seeing Everest, it hit me that I was really there, on the other side of the world, exploring the tallest mountain ranges on the planet. It was an incredibly humbling experience.

Description: To me, this photo represents both the amazing architecture and natural beauty of Slovenia. Nestled just south of the Julian Alps and an hour north of the capital of Ljubljana, this is the only naturally-occurring island in the country. An imposing castle perched on a rock outcrop overlooking the lake and some good (steep) hiking in the woods coupled with the charming island church solidified Bled as one of my favorite places that I visited. Legend has it that your wishes will come true if you ring the church bell three times...

Description: Japan. The photo is of the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Professor Tomasi took us to see some of the ancient temples of Kamakura some dating as far back as the 1200s. I took this photo before I saw the full temple. The buddha towers over the whole mountain watching anyone who gets close enough to approach. Intimidating but also inspiring.
