The Edge of Catastrophe - Poas Volcano, Costa Rica
-
Date
-
2019-09-14
-
Description
-
Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

Double Rainbow Kitchen Superteam Go! - India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
I spent the summer of 2014 completing a health education internship at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, outside of Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh, India. One of my duties was to create a list of observations and suggestions for the community regarding the improvement of kitchen sanitation. I started my observations by volunteering an extra set of hands to help make dinner for the community. I ended up loving my time with the kitchen staff so much that I was regularly hanging out in the kitchen and peeling potatoes or grinding garlic for thukpa (thick Tibetan-style vegetable noodle soup) several nights a week. This photo is of Sharda, me, Kalu, and Rajiv (left to right), part of the kitchen "superteam" posing in front of a double rainbow outside of the kitchen at Jhamtse Gatsal.

Insignificance - Interlaken, Switzerland
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
This photo was taken on a hike through the mountains in Lauterbrunnen. The feeling of insignificance is a very humbling experience and this was one of those moments. When I went to Switzerland I had only been abroad a month and around this time I was going through the normal waves of culture shock where I was starting to miss home. Switzerland was a place that gave me a refresh of home, the smell of fresh air and rain, being surrounded by mountains and complete beauty grounded me. It helped me feel connected to home even though I was far from it. Switzerland holds a special place in my heart because it came when I needed it most. This photo was taken in a moment where I knew I would come back to Switzerland someday. It's unfathomable how mountains and nature that beautiful exist. Although I may have seemed insignificant to the towering mountains, the mountains will always be significant to me.

Washing the fundamentals - Rwanda
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
I will never take washing machines for granted again. The first time I attempted to hand wash my own clothes I was so clueless that one of the maids, with a look of surprised disapproval, walked over, pushed me aside and showed me how it was done. I watched carefully for the mysteries of the inside of washing machines had elude me for the last 24 years. Despite my first hand education, my subsequent clothes washing's left my garments nearly as dirty as before I started. How can something as fundamental as washing my own clothes be something that I had absolutely no idea how to do?

Now I know we aren't wearing any Western Gear but that's because I didn't wear it around the city at all. This is me and my friend Emma on the top of Piazza Michaelangelo with the most stunning view of Florence. Emma and I only knew each other a little bit before going to Italy together and now we have become closer than ever.

The Waterfall at the End of a Tough Hike
-
Date

Description
-
This moment was captured by a friend as I took the time after a emotionally and physically grueling hike. There is nothing better than taking a deep breath in front of roaring waters. Feeling the mist from the water on my face and staring in awe at the scenery was worth every second of the hike.

This photo was taken while I was discussing with these men how modern fishing practices has greatly affect the Moklen culture and their consumerism. They spend 5 hours in the heat of the day making replacement squid traps because others are ran over by big vessels or stolen by smaller fishing boats. This is a time consuming job that take focus away from other traditions that are also being affected by globalization.

Description

This was taken at a memorial for fallen hikers and locals on one of our highest trekking elevations (nearly 5,000 meters) near the town of Lobuche. The memorial felt like a testament to the human spirit and the incredible obstacles that face scientists, locals and hikers who want to experience this incredible ecosystem.

Being able to see the famous endemic species of the Galapagos in person was a privilege. Part of the privilege is respecting the wildlife in its environment. When this blue-footed booby glared at me, I knew my photography time was done.

Impromptu stops can yield amazing results. Our bus was traversing indigenous farmlands when we happened upon Inti Raymi, a celebration of the summer solstice that has happened in Ecuador for at least a thousand years. The vibrancy of it all was awe-inspiring.

Italian Dolomites - Italy
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken during a weekend trip to northern Italy in well known Dolomite Mountains. This trip was significant to me because I made it completely alone, I traveled on local buses and trains, and I got by as much as I could communicating in the Italian language. Once I was on the ascent to Schlernhaus mountain refuge on Mt. Shlern (formerly part of Austria) I was overcome by complete serenity. I stayed the night and hung out with some locals drinking Amaro Montenegro, and woke up early and snapped this photo about 2 miles away from the refuge.
