Filling machine used in salmon canning

Description

The filling machine was invented in Astoria, Oregon by A.H. Moore. It cut and compressed fish into a box and then into one pound cans at a rate of 250 cans per minute. Salt was dropped into each open can as it passed beneath the salter on the machine. The machine in this photo is not operating but cans are visible in the chute above it. Used by Pacific American Fisheries.

Mostly low buildings line the street: Holten's Beer Parlor, a cafe,a bank; a sign hanging from a several story building toward the end of town says "Trading Union" with a sign below it that says "Meat Market;"beyond this building is a building with a sign saying "Pacific American Fisheries, Inc;" beyond that is a residential house. A sign on the three story building in the foreground says "Coliseum" - it appears to be a movie theater with a hotel or apartments above. Five vehicles, two on one side, three on the other, are parked on the street. No people are visible.

Description

In 1939 John M. Edson (1887-1962) headed a group of volunteers who formed the Bellingham Public Museum Society. Edson was an amateur ornithologist and his collection of 320 birds formed one of the original displays at the new museum. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Bellingham Public Schools. He lived at 2210 Victor Street. See also GB2669.
