Caption on front in ink: "Pike 1890 Block." The Bellingham Bay National Bank at the northeast corner of State and Holly Streets. This was constructed of Chuckanut sandstone in 1890. The proerty was purchased by Leonard Pike around 1900. The building was occupied by Puget Sound Power & Light for many years. There is an awning on the ground floor of the building in the middle of the block and a sign on a post that says "Drugs." A man stands in the street beside the building.

Caption: "Mr. Walter's famous cherry and apple orchard. This is a few feet above sea level." And: "House up here on the hill" with an arrow." The photograph is numbered "4." Typed on an envelope with photograph: "10 pictures pertaining to Jimmie Pickett." General George Pickett left his son James with Catherine and William Collins when he went to Virginia to fight in the Civil War. Jimmie's mother, Morning Mist, died shortly after his birth in December 1857. Catherine Collins later became Catherine Walters. The homesteads were in the Olympia, Washington area. Jimmie Pickett, an artist, died in August 1889.

Description

Back caption: "Division Street, Whatcom, after fire of 1885," and "Colony Mill to right. Whatcom Falls - upper center right. Little old millhouse to right of falls." Division Street was an alley between "C" and "D" streets. The fire occurred on May 20, 1885, starting in a shed behind Steinweg's Store at the corner of Astor and "C" Streets. 17 buildings were destroyed. A sign on one building reads "Smith & Parsons Hardware, Stoves, Tinware, Glassware & Crockery." Adjacent to the hardware store is a one selling "Sash, Doors, Paints & Oils." Smith & Parsons were in business in Whatcom in 1883. By 1888, Parsons was gone and only Smith remained in the hardware business.

Possibly a rock quarry - many large piecesof rock are visible on the hill. Sixteen men stand at various points on the slope.Smoke or dust rises in two areas on the slope.In the lower left corner several men are loading rocks into a vessel, perhaps a small boat. A vertical wooden structure rises out of the water just beyond them - possibly some kind of a hoist. There is a "3" in the lower left corner of the photo.
