Title: Preservation of a Culture

Description: This photo was taken in Zaouiat Ahansal, a remote mountain village in the Haut Atlas of Morocco when I was there studying development. This village has historical importance as an Islamic religious site but had fallen into disrepair during the French Colonialization. Rather than leave it to crumble, though, many people dedicated to seeing this cultural site preserved have worked to restore the Zaouiat to its original condition, encouraging the village to preserve its lifestyle. This photo captures the mosque and some of the unique mountain architecture of this village and reminds me of the importance of not allowing the diverse cultural traditions to be lost under westernized development.

Title: Magical Realism - Paris, France

Description: The Dali museum was my favorite museum in Paris. It's located in Montmartre, which is personally the coolest area of Paris, and it is a tiny museum with Dali's best works of art. The melting clocks were basically everywhere on his works of art and I loved it so much it really inspired me more than I thought it would. He has such a way with Magical Realism and it really shows in all of his art pieces. He was also very ahead of his time and his work was very satirical to me which was inspiring. I have always had a tougher time connecting with art but all of his work really got me.

Description: This photo was taken at the Ming Tombs near Beijing China, very close to a section of the Great Wall of China. The entire area is scattered with burial grounds of Ming Dynasty Emperors. To try and stay cool in the summer heat I chose to sport my shirt from Western Washington University's intramural sports competitions.

Description: The Namahage are a local tradition in Akita Prefecture. They are essentially folklore-esque monsters played by ordinary people in town, who dress up once a year and go door to door drinking lots of sake and scaring the children into behaving. They also tend to appear in tourist locations as they are somewhat of an icon of Akita. This picture presents my slightly bewildered reaction to encountering one up close.

I felt the love she had to share with those around her, she did this for everyone, she made sure everyone had their food before she helped herself.

Description: This picture was taken in Buenos Aires, Argentina, outside of Club de Musica. In it is me with my groupmates and professor of the course. While attending Universidad de Palermo I took an events planning course where we learned how to plan all types of different events and even got to put on our own at the end of the semester. My groupmates and I decided to put on a music festival in a small local bar called "Musica Sin Fronteras" and the money we raised by selling tickets was donated to "Voluntarios Sin Fronteras", an organization that provides local kids with sport and art related activities as well as school supplies where needed.

Title: Between the Breaths - Leeward Islands

Description: As a student here at Western I have found myself studying so hard to reach my goal, but abroad I was able to experience the goal I am after and seemingly rejuvenated my passions to find excitement in continuing on with the daily grind. As a SCUBA diver, it's hard to explain the emotions and thoughts you experience while underwater. Alongside the silence comes a quiet mind, or a place to let your thoughts drift off with ease. In this picture we are diving off if the coast lines of Statia, an island within the Leeward Islands, and ventured to an abandoned anchor. The anchor itself was immovable and forever stagnant, but the life around and atop the anchor encouraged you to take slower and deeper breaths, to stay down a little longer. Each dive brought to my attention how much I adore the lifestyle of diving, and how the path I am chugging along, is surely the right path.

Title: Sounds of the Rainforest

Description: On a night hike for a field study class at La Selva, I ran into many red eyed tree frogs. These frogs are a national symbol for Costa Rica and difficult to spot on the wild. I was very lucky to see as many as I did, especially this mating pair. The photo was shot on my phone camera with a little teamwork to get the flashlight lighting perfect. Thanks to the frogs for being very patient with me and showing off their beautiful colors.
