In the Land of Giants - Norway
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
The barren, rocky landscape of Jotunheimen (English: The Home of the Giants) is a stark contrast to Norway's many lush forests; a contrast intensified when you fall asleep on the bus, surrounded by tree-covered hills, and wake up to see only grass, rocks, shrubs, and rugged mountains, rising out of the earth like waking giants. It was like waking up on an entirely different world. As a part of the excursion, we hiked to the top of one of those mountains — Bitihorn. It is from there, exhausted and sore from the rough 2000 ft. ascent, that I captured this picture. Even though I was surrounded by many of my fellow international students, the extensive Norwegian landscape and immense sky made me feel incredibly small and insignificant until I realized that, as a member of the international community, I can break down mountains — mountains that still separate many countries of the world — through friendship, peace, and an open-mind.

Description

This ancient temple is up in the hill tribes of Thailand. I stayed in a Karen hill tribe for a few days while I was abroad. This area is incredible and so different from other Thai culture I have experienced. This temple is beautiful and I got to visit it during buddhist holiday.

Cuba is all about music, dancing, and color. This photo is of a musician playing his trumpet on an otherwise quiet street corner. My favorite part of Cuba was the liveliness of the city and this man's music made the city that much more alive.

Mini-Monks at the Tawang Monastery - India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
These young monks were playing on a cell phone on a rooftop just outside of the gompa at the Tawang Monastery. Due to its remote location and restricted access for foreigners, the Mon region of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India is one of the last areas in which Tibetan culture remains mostly intact. With the recent construction of a road leading to the nearby border with Bhutan, the region is no longer as isolated and is increasingly open to outside influence. This photo offers an interesting juxtaposition of traditional culture with the products of such globalization.

Colorful Copenhagen, Denmark

Date
-

-
Description
-
This photo was taken during my Fall Break. Copenhagen was one of the most exciting and beautiful places I visited. My ISEP friend from Virginia and I had taken a canal tour, and when we got off, there were all these colorful buildings lining the water. It was freezing cold, but we had to keep stopping to take pictures of all of it.

Rila Monastery

Description

During Orientation Week, one of the first places they took us was Rila Monastery. Despite being so high up in the mountains, we were still surrounded by trees on all sides and it was an incredibly spiritual spot to visit because you felt so close to the heavens. The architecture and the artwork throughout almost felt unreal. I've seen lots of churches in Bulgaria since then, but Rila Monastery holds a special place in my heart.

City Bell, Argentina
-
Date
-

-
Description
-
This picture was taken in City Bell, Argentina. It is the town that my mother grew up in before moving to the United States at 16. Today we still have family living there and I am pictured with my great aunt Blanca, who I surprised when I showed up at her doorstep after not seeing her for five years. She could not believe I had come all that way to study and live so near to her (I'm an hour train ride away). It was hard to keep the secret since it took months of planning but it was worth it!

Cherry Blossoms and Peace Signs - Japan
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
Here is a photo of my friends from Asia University (top row) and me after a day of sitting under the cherry blossoms and sipping on some sake. We asked a stranger to take our photo, and it turned out he was a local high schooler. When he and his friends (bottom row) learned that I was an American student abroad, they really wanted to get a photo together, so we took one big photo together. Here, I'm sporting a WWU T-shirt which doubled as my band uniform when I performed with my AUAP friends at WWU. And of course, no photo taken in Japan is complete without the customary peace signs.

Jimjil-bangin

Description
-
We visited a traditional Korean style sauna equipped with everything you could ever need. Often times people can stay in a Jimjilbang for as long as you want as it is seen as a relaxing stay away from the stress of daily life. We had traditional sweet rice drinks, wore matching pajama-style outfits, ate traditional Korean food, and experienced all of the different rooms available which ranged from an ice room to a room that was over 180 degrees Fahrenheit. I will say that after staying at the sauna, I have never felt so relaxed and my skin felt incredible.

Calle Betis - Spain
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
Calle Betis (the row of buildings) and the Puente de Triana (the bridge), both pictured, are two of the most popular gathering spots in Sevilla, Spain. This is where the locals spend their time eating tapas with friends, and shopping at the Mercado de Triana (Triana Market) for fresh fruits and vegetables. Sevilla became my second home while I was there, and this little slice of the city was a huge part of that. This photo was taken on my last night there, right after the sun had set.

SakuraSakura - Japan
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
One of the things I have dreamed of doing since I started studying Japanese was to go Hanami (literally flower viewing). Hanami involves going to the park and sitting under the beautiful cherry blossoms while enjoying food and drinks with friends and family. To me, cherry blossoms are one of the most aesthetically pleasing things to the eyes. Hanami ususally lasts about a week, and it's so big in Japan that they have blooming forecasts so that you can find out when the cherry blossoms are at their peak. It's times like these when I wish I actually had a real camera, as even this photo does not capture the true beauty of the cherry blossoms I saw that day.

Umbrella Street - Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
It was the moment I saw the "umbrella street" that I fell in love with the little town of Blagoevgrad where my host university is. When I arrived, it didn't feel like a very developed town and there was lots of graffiti everywhere that I wasn't used to, and that I thought affected the look of the town. The first weekend though, I went shopping and turned to walk down the main street when I had to stop and take in the fun, colorful, and whimsical umbrellas that lined the street spanning the whole town. It was completely unexpected, and at the same time, the perfect touch.

One of my excursions was to Portugal's capitol, Lisbon. The hostel we stayed at was on the top of a hill, in a neighborhood called Bairro Alto. This particular neighborhood is known for its local, laid- back feel, and these streamers were found on almost every street.

This was taken one day when our host mom took us out in the water to gather sea urchins for dinner. I really enjoy this photo especially since I was in a hurry to take it as my camera had no life to it. When I went back to look at the photo, I was very happy to see this moment frozen in time. It reminds me of warm sea air, the perfect breeze, and a happy and full heart.
