The Edge of Catastrophe - Poas Volcano, Costa Rica
-
Date
-
2019-09-14
-
Description
-
Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

Spectacular Obstacles

Description
-
This was taken at a memorial for fallen hikers and locals on one of our highest trekking elevations (nearly 5,000 meters) near the town of Lobuche. The memorial felt like a testament to the human spirit and the incredible obstacles that face scientists, locals and hikers who want to experience this incredible ecosystem.

Italian Dolomites - Italy
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken during a weekend trip to northern Italy in well known Dolomite Mountains. This trip was significant to me because I made it completely alone, I traveled on local buses and trains, and I got by as much as I could communicating in the Italian language. Once I was on the ascent to Schlernhaus mountain refuge on Mt. Shlern (formerly part of Austria) I was overcome by complete serenity. I stayed the night and hung out with some locals drinking Amaro Montenegro, and woke up early and snapped this photo about 2 miles away from the refuge.

Hii ni mlima wangu (this is my mountain) - Tanzania

Description
-
This is a picture of me at the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to climb with eight of my fellow volunteers with an exceptional expedition company. During the hike I constantly questioned whether or not I would be able to summit. The phrase I used for the title of this photo is one that my fellow volunteers and I learned while hiking that had a lot of significance when we all reached the top. Accomplishing this feat is something that I know I will be able to carry with me for the rest of my life, and can use as reassurance that I can do whatever I set my mind to, as long as my priorities are straight.

Everest?! - Okhaldhunga, Nepal

Description

The rest of the trip feels a little anticlimactic when, on your first full hiking day, you see in the distance the tallest mountain in the world. After seeing Everest, it hit me that I was really there, on the other side of the world, exploring the tallest mountain ranges on the planet. It was an incredibly humbling experience.

All of the churches I saw and visited in Italy were just absolutely breathtaking. This particular church was so beautiful, and in this photograph, in contrast to the clouds, it was astounding.

Lake Bled

Date

Description
-
To me, this photo represents both the amazing architecture and natural beauty of Slovenia. Nestled just south of the Julian Alps and an hour north of the capital of Ljubljana, this is the only naturally-occurring island in the country. An imposing castle perched on a rock outcrop overlooking the lake and some good (steep) hiking in the woods coupled with the charming island church solidified Bled as one of my favorite places that I visited. Legend has it that your wishes will come true if you ring the church bell three times...

Floralis Generica

Description
-
This picture was taken in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The name of this sculpture is "Floralis Generica". At the moment the flower is shown with its petals closed since it is the afternoon, but in the morning the petals open up. This was one of the first works of art I visited in Buenos Aires, little did I know at the moment that there was going to be many more amazing works to explore as well!

7 Rila Lakes Field Trip
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
This is a photo of the 7 Rila Lakes. We took a field trip there as part of my Intro to Bulgarian course and spent an entire day marveling at the natural beauty of Bulgaria. I managed to reach all seven lakes during the hike, and after stopping for lunch, my Bulgarian teacher had us sing some Bulgarian folk songs she'd brought. None of us were native speakers and we probably didn't do the songs justice, but other hikers stopped to listen and it was a beautiful song in the spirit of the lakes.

Home Away from Home - Florence, Italy
-
Date
-

-
Description
-
Bellingham is known for having beautiful sunsets. Getting to see the oranges, yellows, and reds arrayed across the sky is one of my favorite parts of going to school up here. So when I got to see this beautiful sight while in Florence, I was reminded of my "Belling-home" and how much I love the world we live in. Even halfway around the world you can find the peace and beauty of home.

Great Buddha of Kamakura

Date

Description
-
Japan. The photo is of the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Professor Tomasi took us to see some of the ancient temples of Kamakura some dating as far back as the 1200s. I took this photo before I saw the full temple. The buddha towers over the whole mountain watching anyone who gets close enough to approach. Intimidating but also inspiring.

Greece
-
Description
-
Before I went to Greece I didn't know anything about the sheer amounts of cats that roam the streets. Everywhere we went, especially in cities, cats would be all around. Even up in monasteries and historic sites we visited, cats would be there. This cat, was right outside the old Greek theater at the Oracle of Apollo.
