Mushroom Rock at Balandra Beach - Mexico
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
For the faculty-led trip to La Paz, Mexico our group took a trip to Balandra beach. There it has beautiful white sandy beaches as well as the iconic "mushroom rock." The story goes that someone knocked off the top of the rock and then the government paid to cement it back on so that it wouldn't fall off again.

Description

It was taken from the top of the "Monumento de la Bandera" or "National Flag Memorial". The Argentine flag was first flown on the other side of the nearby river by its creator, Manuel Belgrano (on February 27, 1812) and this memorial was inaugurated on the anniversary of his death (June 20, 1957). I am pictured here with my grandpa's friend Susana while the Argentine flag flies in the background.

Taken by the Current - Caribbean Sea
-
Date
-
2019-07-10
-
Description
-
Off of the boat within the Caribbean Sea, we did a handful of diving. When moored along the coast line of Saba, the current was so ripping that most of our diving was letting the current take us and simply directing the angle it took you at. This selfie was on a drift dive, so content with letting the ocean's power move my body throughout the dive site. The power you can feel from being surrounded underwater among incredible life, is one that is hard to top. This photo forever captures a feeling in time, that I can never, and will never, forget.

Jhamtse Got Style - India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken right after the Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community 8th and 9th grade boy's volleyball team, Jhamtse Got Style, found out that they had earned another chance at winning the Lumla volleyball tournament. These boys grew up together at Jhamtse Gatsal, a community, school, and home for over 85 orphaned and abandoned children from the surrounding area, and have been best friends for years. The entire Jhamtse Gatsal community had taken the thirty-minute truck ride to Lumla to watch their team compete, and the boys were overjoyed, though exhausted, to share this victory with their brothers and sisters. As a visitor to this community, it was really striking and joyful to see the community come together to cheer their team on and to celebrate their win.

Ferhat Pasha Mosque - Republika Srpska, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Description
-
This photo shows the painted dome of the mosque. This mosque was destroyed in the 1990s during the ethnic cleansing of Bosniak Muslims by Serbs in the wars of the 1990s. It was my cohorts first stop on our week-long excursion dedicated to learning about and honoring the more than 8,000 muslim victims killed in the Genocide. The mosque was rebuilt in 2001 and now signifies the resilience of Bosniak Muslims and their refusal to be erased.

Trevor, Junior, and Steve - Kenya
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
In Kochia, Kenya the main focus of my study abroad trip was to build relationships, little did I know the strongest relationships I built were with these three boys. Everyday while walking to the Secondary all girls school, they would walk with me and ask me how my day was and in return I asked them and gave them a ride or two on my shoulders. The most valuable thing I learned from them was that I did not have to seek to discover local culture. While they couldn't communicate in English, I discovered what it truly meant to be Kenyan through them: to love, to take initiative, and practice compassion.

What to Bring/Not to Bring Lessons - Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
Prior to coming to Bulgaria, I attended orientations and did research on what was commonly worn by Eastern European citizens because I didn't want to make myself vulnerable while traveling. This meant leaving behind: jean shorts, plaid shirts, my Seahawks jersey and accessories, and my Western gear. Naturally, when I arrived over in Bulgaria and saw the other students with plaid shirts and american football gear, I was a little disheartened. But now I know better for next time. Until then, this little makeshift WWU notebook will have to be enough!

Gwanghwamun - South Korea
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This photo was taken on the first week of my one-year adventure in Seoul, South Korea. I wasn't sure what to expect of this huge mega city, but it just kept getting better. This photo is taken at the main gate of the palace called "Gyeongbok-gung" located nearby to Seoul's city hall. What astounded me about this palace is that from the inside, one can see the giant skyscrapers powering Korea's economy in the background. The mixture of contemporary and ancient architecture was truly astounding. The past of Korea's culture was contained in this small area of palace, while it's modern day culture was shown behind it. In this shot, I am capturing a bit of the former.

Sharing Couscous - Morocco
-
Date
-
2019-09-14
-
Description
-
This is one of the first meals that I had when I arrived in Morocco for the first time. This was the moment when it struck me that I really was in another country, with a completely different culture from mine. Sharing this communal meal of couscous (which was really delicious) with everyone at the table was a new experience for me, a new way of eating food. Despite the cultural differences, I was able to connect to the other people around the table and start to build relationships. It was a beautiful, eye-opening moment for me.

Plaza de España - Seville, Spain

Description

This was taken in the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain at dusk. This is a huge landmark in Spain, where people can enjoy the intricately decorated architecture. There are even ducks you can feed! Outside of the plaza is a huge garden that you can get lost in for hours! It was amazing to sit by the fountain and watch the sun set over Seville in the Plaza de España.

The Edge of Catastrophe - Poas Volcano, Costa Rica
-
Date
-
2019-09-14
-
Description
-
Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

Double Rainbow Kitchen Superteam Go! - India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
I spent the summer of 2014 completing a health education internship at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, outside of Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh, India. One of my duties was to create a list of observations and suggestions for the community regarding the improvement of kitchen sanitation. I started my observations by volunteering an extra set of hands to help make dinner for the community. I ended up loving my time with the kitchen staff so much that I was regularly hanging out in the kitchen and peeling potatoes or grinding garlic for thukpa (thick Tibetan-style vegetable noodle soup) several nights a week. This photo is of Sharda, me, Kalu, and Rajiv (left to right), part of the kitchen "superteam" posing in front of a double rainbow outside of the kitchen at Jhamtse Gatsal.

Insignificance - Interlaken, Switzerland
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
This photo was taken on a hike through the mountains in Lauterbrunnen. The feeling of insignificance is a very humbling experience and this was one of those moments. When I went to Switzerland I had only been abroad a month and around this time I was going through the normal waves of culture shock where I was starting to miss home. Switzerland was a place that gave me a refresh of home, the smell of fresh air and rain, being surrounded by mountains and complete beauty grounded me. It helped me feel connected to home even though I was far from it. Switzerland holds a special place in my heart because it came when I needed it most. This photo was taken in a moment where I knew I would come back to Switzerland someday. It's unfathomable how mountains and nature that beautiful exist. Although I may have seemed insignificant to the towering mountains, the mountains will always be significant to me.

Washing the fundamentals - Rwanda
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
I will never take washing machines for granted again. The first time I attempted to hand wash my own clothes I was so clueless that one of the maids, with a look of surprised disapproval, walked over, pushed me aside and showed me how it was done. I watched carefully for the mysteries of the inside of washing machines had elude me for the last 24 years. Despite my first hand education, my subsequent clothes washing's left my garments nearly as dirty as before I started. How can something as fundamental as washing my own clothes be something that I had absolutely no idea how to do?
