Guatapé, Colombia
-
Date
-

-
Description
-
This photo was taken in Guatapé, Colombia, about an hour and a half away from Medellín. Guatapé is home to an impressive tower. After a challenging 700-step climb, we were treated with one of the most breathtaking views any of us had ever seen. Colombia, I have learned, has no shortage of natural beauty.

Mushroom Rock at Balandra Beach - Mexico
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
For the faculty-led trip to La Paz, Mexico our group took a trip to Balandra beach. There it has beautiful white sandy beaches as well as the iconic "mushroom rock." The story goes that someone knocked off the top of the rock and then the government paid to cement it back on so that it wouldn't fall off again.

Amazonian False Scorpion - Ecuador
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
Our guide in the Amazon, Rolando, saw this false scorpion (actually a spider) on the ground and picked it up for us. In the picture, it's sitting on my elbow, while Jeremy looks a little bothered in the background. The Amazon was one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced. It's so beautiful, and feels so peaceful. My time in Ecuador, and especially my time in the Amazon, made me realize how much I want to travel more, and try everything I can (like holding the false scorpion, or eating live beetle larvae at the local village). The trip inspired me to pursue a career abroad, particularly in developing countries like Ecuador.

Rosario, Argentina

Description
-
It was taken from the top of the "Monumento de la Bandera" or "National Flag Memorial". The Argentine flag was first flown on the other side of the nearby river by its creator, Manuel Belgrano (on February 27, 1812) and this memorial was inaugurated on the anniversary of his death (June 20, 1957). I am pictured here with my grandpa's friend Susana while the Argentine flag flies in the background.

Perspective

Description

This was when my program took us on a boat tour along the river of Paris and my friend looked at the Eiffel Tower through the window as we passed it. I feel this photograph depicts my talent because it's all about the perspective. I wanted to show the perspective of what it's like looking up at the Eiffel Tower and to feel as though you were looking through her eyes. It's a famous monument I had only ever seen in movies and seeing it in person was surreal. This picture captured a moment where my friend was taking it all in.

This photo was taken on top of Schöckl Mountain located in Graz, Austria. It's the local mountain here in Graz. It is special to me because it was a hard hike to get to the top. My friends and I bonded over that experience. It showcases the beauty of Austria and the beauty of friendship.

Lanús, Argentina

Description
-
This picture was taken in Lanús, Argentina. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to study abroad in Argentina was to see my relatives again and learn more about the country my mother's side of the family is from. My mother moved away when she was 16 but has managed to keep in touch with family in Argentina all these years. Here I am with my grandpa's cousin and her family enjoying a traditional Argentine asado, this is also the last picture taken of my great, great aunt Adela (pictured in the wheelchair) before she passed away. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to study abroad when I did.

Taken by the Current - Caribbean Sea
-
Date
-
2019-07-10
-
Description
-
Off of the boat within the Caribbean Sea, we did a handful of diving. When moored along the coast line of Saba, the current was so ripping that most of our diving was letting the current take us and simply directing the angle it took you at. This selfie was on a drift dive, so content with letting the ocean's power move my body throughout the dive site. The power you can feel from being surrounded underwater among incredible life, is one that is hard to top. This photo forever captures a feeling in time, that I can never, and will never, forget.

This is a photo of a street performer dressed as a kappa. We came across him at an Ocean Day Festival and he came right up to us with his tongue. Kappa are a Japanese folk creature that live in the water and drown/eat kids so the kids (and us) would squeal and run away before coming back to get another fun scare.

Trevor, Junior, and Steve - Kenya
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
In Kochia, Kenya the main focus of my study abroad trip was to build relationships, little did I know the strongest relationships I built were with these three boys. Everyday while walking to the Secondary all girls school, they would walk with me and ask me how my day was and in return I asked them and gave them a ride or two on my shoulders. The most valuable thing I learned from them was that I did not have to seek to discover local culture. While they couldn't communicate in English, I discovered what it truly meant to be Kenyan through them: to love, to take initiative, and practice compassion.
