This photo was taken while I was discussing with these men how modern fishing practices has greatly affect the Moklen culture and their consumerism. They spend 5 hours in the heat of the day making replacement squid traps because others are ran over by big vessels or stolen by smaller fishing boats. This is a time consuming job that take focus away from other traditions that are also being affected by globalization.

Spectacular Obstacles

Description

This was taken at a memorial for fallen hikers and locals on one of our highest trekking elevations (nearly 5,000 meters) near the town of Lobuche. The memorial felt like a testament to the human spirit and the incredible obstacles that face scientists, locals and hikers who want to experience this incredible ecosystem.

Impromptu stops can yield amazing results. Our bus was traversing indigenous farmlands when we happened upon Inti Raymi, a celebration of the summer solstice that has happened in Ecuador for at least a thousand years. The vibrancy of it all was awe-inspiring.

Hii ni mlima wangu (this is my mountain) - Tanzania

Date
-

Description
-
This is a picture of me at the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to climb with eight of my fellow volunteers with an exceptional expedition company. During the hike I constantly questioned whether or not I would be able to summit. The phrase I used for the title of this photo is one that my fellow volunteers and I learned while hiking that had a lot of significance when we all reached the top. Accomplishing this feat is something that I know I will be able to carry with me for the rest of my life, and can use as reassurance that I can do whatever I set my mind to, as long as my priorities are straight.

I took this photo in Phapang, Thailand. This monk is the eldest in the village. He has been seeking Jai Yen or "cool heart" for the last 30 years, and at 89 years, after copious amounts of solitude in the jungle, he says he has found it.

The Gift of a Second Mother - Ladakh, India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This is a photo of my Ama-le, which means Mother in Ladakhi, the native language I attempted to learn while abroad. Although we did not speak the same language, my Ama-le remained patient, compassionate, and unconditonally generous and loving. She woke up at 5AM every morning and began working in the fields. She did not stop until sunset. I learned many things from this woman, but the potential of human strength was the most evident. The village rests within the Himalaya Mountains at 13,000 feet. The environment is extremely harsh at this elevation, however, the people of Stongdey have managed to sustain their lands with traditional agricultural practices for thousands of years. Brilliant fields of barley, golden wheat, peas, and other fruits color the village.

Our classrooms were a bit different from most. Each day was spent hiking anywhere between 6-12 miles and our learning took place outside of a traditional classroom setting. It was fascinating to get to see and experience the cultural, physical and biological processes that we were learning about.

A Tihar Sendoff!
-
Date
-

Description
-
Nepal plays host to several festivals. We happened to be lucky enough to be there during two of their major ones: Dashain and Tihar, which take place during almost the entirety of October. This was on our last night of the trek in a village called Phaphlu. Dancers perform in the streets for donations, oftentimes inviting the audience to join in. It really was a spectacular sendoff.

"Karen Tribe" - Thailand

Date

-
Description

This moment took place while I was in the hill tribe village. I was completely mesmerized by this woman - her traditional beads, her head covering (which I learned stems from ancient Burmese traditions, as this village is very near to Burma), her traditional handwoven dress... It is inspiring to see how simply others live. It is inspiring to see the community that exists in these areas. What a privilege!

The Miracle of Water - Tanzania
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
An hour outside camp, our Land Rover sprung a flat tire. We had rolled to a stop mere meters from two young boys standing at the side of the road asking for handouts. A fellow student in our vehicle stepped outside, filled a bottle with water from our supply, and handed it to the older child. The older boy graciously handed it down to the younger, who could not contain his thirst. It is amazing that a simple thing like clean water is such a spectacular thing to many people in this part of the world. Meanwhile, we take it for granted every day. We can find it everywhere, while these young children depend on the generosity of complete strangers to drink healthy water every once in a while.

Japanese Kimono
-
Date
-
2018
-
Description
-
While in Akita, Japan. My school, Akita International University, had a festival going on. At the festival, I got to try on a traditional Japanese kimono. Some internationals may be offended by this. But may I say, I didn't ask to try it on, the locals asked me if I would like to. I am really happy that Japan is open to international people trying on their traditional wear. It makes me feel more connected to Japan. I would love to come back again!
