Present chairman Neter and trustees Edens and Tec. Upon the refusal of the teachers to remain at the old salary during the coming school year or to accept the schedule fixed by the board's resolution at the last meeting unless a deficiency claim were included to date from the beginning of the next school year and the board realizing that the Teachers were not receiving salaries commensurable with those of like instructors in other- WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1900 Volume 01 - Page 138 1900-05-10 institutions and not deeming it advisable to attempt to replace the faculty or unable to do so at the schedule salaries acceded to the demands of the teachers to certify a deficiency clause for the said deficiencies provided further that the salary of Miss Sadie Rogers shall be $1200 per year instead of $1100 as previously fixed. Jere Neterer, chairman. 1900-05-25 The board met in regular session at the school building at 3PM: present the chairman and trustees Edens and Teck. The minutes of the meetins of April 30th and May 10th were read and approved. The following vouchers were ordered certified to the state auditor that warrants might issue. Voucher No. 226 - favor L.H. Darwin $31.05 for expense account as clerk board trustees for month ending May 25th. As per attached vouchers humbered 1 to 12. Maintenance. Voucher No. 227 - favor E.T. Mathes $23.30 for expense account as principal school for month ending May 25th as per attached vouchers numbered 1 to 13. Maintenance. Voucher No. 228 - favor J.C. Holman $20.80 for 80% of purchase price 13 cords wood at $200 per cord = $26.00 as per contract. Maintenance. Voucher No. 229 - favor J.W. Seeby and Co. $6.54 for sundry supplies furnished the school bill May 25th attached. Maintenance. Voucher No. 230 - favor L.H. Darwin $25.00 for service as clerk board trustees from May 15th to June 15th. Maintenance. WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1900 Volume 01 - Page 139 1900-05-10 the chairman reported that the B.B.I. Co had offered to furnish the wood to head the building for the entire year for $600 and to take the contracts already executed by the board for wood off its hands. Also that they would wait for their pay until after the session of the next legislature. The board decided not to interfere with the arrangements already made. The question of electing additional member of the faculty was laid over until such a time as principal Mathes could submit recommendations. Principal Mathes went over the copy for the annual catalogue of the school which he said he hoped to have ready by June 14th. The copy was approved by the board. The question of the election of a librarian for the ensuing year was broached and chairman Neterer stated that the present one, Miss Thompson, would remain next year for $60 per month, $35 of which must be paid in cash and the balance to become a deficiency claim in her favor. On motion of trustee Edens, Miss Thompson was retained as librarian and secretary to the principal for the ensuing year at $35 per month from Sept 1st, 1900 to April 1st 1901 and $60 per month from April 1st to the close of the school year provided that her deficiency claims of $25.00 per month from Sept 1st to April 1st be (?) to the next legislature together with the deficiency claim of the teachers. Mathes, principal $166.66; J.T. Forrest, teacher $100.00; F.W. Eply, teacher $100.00; Sadie Rogers, teacher $100.00; Avadana Millett, teacher $90.00; Jane Connell, teacher $90.00; Ida Agnes Baker, teacher $50.00; Robb B. Vaile, teacher $50.00; Catherine Montgomery, teacher $70.00; Hattie Thompson, Librarian $30.00; J.A. McBride, Janitor $41.66; Total $888.32. L.H. Darwin, clerk. ##
