Show more1903-05 WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1903WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1903 Volume 01 - Page 249 1903-05-14 The board met pursuant to call at the office of chairman White in the Bank of Whatcom. Trustees White, Edens and Teck, Principal Mathes and the clerk were present. The clerk reported having notified the teachers of the resolution fixing their salaries for the period intervening between April first and August 31st 1904. Adopted by the board at the meeting of March 23rd, and that - as a result of this notification he had received the acceptance of the conditions therein laid down by the board, from the following teachers - E.T. Mathes, Principal; J.N. Bowman; H.J. Tromanhauser; F.W. Eply; Aranille Coleman; J.T. Forrest; A.P. Romine; E.N. Stone; Ida Agnes Baker; Washington Wilson. Letters were read from Mittie M. Myers, Frances S. Hays, Mabel Zoe Wilson and Cora F. Bratton asking the board to still further increase their salaries over the school's adopted March 23rd last. Trustee Edens said- WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1903 Volume 01 - Page 250 1903-05-14 that he was very proud of the faculty of the school as at present constituted and that he would hate very much that any action of the board should result in its being broken up. He was convinced from the inquiries which he had made that the same high estimation he held of the faculty was shared by the people generally over the state. He closed asking in the interest of Harmony that the resolution employing the tachers and (?) their salaries, adopted at the meeting of March 23rd be reconsidered and amended in certain instances. Thereupon trustee Teck moved that the resolution be reconsidered and it was by a unanimous vote. Chairman White then declared the resolution to then be again before the board. Trustee Edens moved that that line wherein the salary of Miss Frances Hays was fixed at $1050 dollars per annum be amended to read $1150 per annum. The amendment was adopted. Then in succession these other ammendments were made without a dissenting vote. The salary of Mittie M. Myers to be $1250 per year instead of $1150. The salary of Ada Hogle to be $950 instead of $850. The salary of E.N. Stone to be $1100 per year instead of $1050. The salary of Catherine Montgomery to be $950 per year instead of $900. The salary of Ida Agnes Baker to be $950 instead of $900. The salary of Cora Bratton to be $950 per year instead of $900. The salary of Mabel Zoe Wilson to be $650 per year instead of $600. The salary of Nillie A. Cooper to be $625 per year instead of $540. The changes above ennumerated to (?) May first 1903, same in the case- WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1903 Volume 01 - Page 251 1903-05-14 of E.N. Stone, his salary to remain at $1050 until Sep. first 1903, when the raise shall take effect. Principal Mathes was authorized to enter into negotiations for the employment of two additional teachers, the combined salaries of the two not to exceed $1700 per annum. The following resolution offered by Trustee Edens was adopted, to become a part of a set of resolutions, the remainder of which Trustee Teck said he would prepare and submit to the individual members of the board, the clerk to forward a copy of the entire set when approved individually by all the members of the board to each of the teachers employed in the school. Resolved that all teachers of the Normal School shall submit their requests to the principal of the school, who shall present them to the board for their approval when such approval is necessary before the order be (?). Resolved further that the clerk be ordered to notify all teachers of this action of the board. The clerk submitted the blank form of the teachers contracts which attorney O.P Brown had drawn and the same was approved by the board. Chairman White was authorized to purchase a door for the vault in the building. Architect A. Lee, was by resolution, emplyed to draw the plans and specificationand to superintend the work of completing all the unfinished rooms in the school building. Principal Mathes was authorized to get the invitations to the commencement exercises printed. WWU Board of Trustees meeting minutes for May 1903 Volume 01 - Page 252 1903-05-14 the Principal and Clerk were instructed to secure bids for printing the catalogue and were authorized to let the same to the lowest and best bidder. The following vouchers were ordered certified to the state auditor that warrants might issue: Voucher No. 1 - favor Chas. E. Mathes $78.05 for expense account as Principal for period ending May 14-03, as per attached vouchers numbered 1 to 36. Maintenance. Voucher No. 4 - favor Fairhaven Times $19.00 as follows: May 14 - to 1000 tabulated programs of studies $8.00; to 1800 tabulated absence reports $7.50; to 1000 tabulated withdrawal blanks $4.00; $19.50.
