- Caption on reverse in ink: "Stickney Island Indian School Lynden" and on address label in lower left corner: "Mrs. Edward Edson - 312 Mount Baker Apts. - Bellingham, Washington" Group of about thirty-five children and adults assembled on the front steps of a white clapboard, three story, single gabled building. Three two over two windows are on the second floor; two on the third and two plus the front door are on the first floor. A flagpole with a flag rises from the roof over the front entrance. A wooden fence is in the foreground; a barn is to the left and back of the school building. The students wear light colored clothing; the adults are dressed in black.

Hans Berthusen was born in Norway in 1860 and settled in Whatcom County in 1883, eventually owning 263 acres west of Lynden where he first ran a dairy, then cultivated the land. He married Leda Hawley in 1889. At his death in 1944 his property was bequeathed to the city of Lynden and became Berthusen Park. See also GB2766.
