Description: According to Galen Biery's "Looking Back" (p.100) this is "Part of New Whatcom in 1892. The large stone building in the center was the Lighthouse Block, built in 1890...The large building at the left is the Grand Central Hotel, Forest and Holly Streets. Van's B.B. Furniture Store was later built in the triangle in the foreground." The Reveille newspaper building is in the right foreground; it was founded in 1883 by T.G. Nicklin and W.D. Jenkins. There are several small storefronts and residential buildings inters persed among the larger ones. The background is undeveloped land with hills and trees.

Her two volume "History of Whatcom County" was published in 1926.

Dirt piles are in front of several buildings on the east side of the street. A few people are visible in the distance as is a carriage. The street heads up the hill to the south.

Description: Photocopy of newspaper article and picture with caption "Lower Falls as They Appeared in 1883" Two buildings - a house and a shop - next to a waterfall and rushing stream with a footbridge over it. The article below the photo says: "When the Colony had built its mill and practically the same view as that older one including the sloop Undine. The company shop and office have been put up, and the log footbridge replaced by one more permanent. Mr. Ransom's cottage is beside the falls, and the steps leading up to the trail to Sehome are quite plain. The piling and old foundation shown is all that remained of the original mill, built in 1853, thirty years before this picture was taken." Faintly visible on lower left in photo: "...Creek Falls, Whatcom" The Washington Colony Mill was established in 1853 by Roeder and Peabody on the site below lower Whatcom Falls on Whatcom Creek below today's (2011) post office. In 1895 George and James Loggie bought the mill and renamed it Whatcom Falls Mill.

Taylor - Fairhaven; Miss Katherine Wardner - Fairhaven; Miss Gertrude Hamilton - New Whatcom" and "Squalicum - New Whatcom, 5-26&27-1893" Possibly an engagement party for Mr. Taylor and Miss Wardner since a feather boa is draped around them. The men wear three piece suits; three of the women wear dark, fitted long dresses and fancy hats; Mrs. Hamilton wears a large corsage. The other three women wear lighter colored long dresses or shirtwaists.
