Description: This photo was taken in Plovdiv, one of the more popular towns in Bulgaria. I feel so lucky to have been in Plovdiv in 2019 because this year it is one of the two European Capital's of Culture. The Capital of Culture initiative highlights the role of culture in building identity and over 300 projects have been organized in Plovdiv. They include festivals, exhibitions, and theater productions. Plovdiv is especially proud of its artwork, and this lion was my absolute favorite!

Title: Ascension Cathedral

Description: I love this photo for so many reasons. The way the cathedral looked in the sunlight, the fact that it was such a cloudless day in Veliko Tarnovo, and the fact that the jet streams in the sky in the background remind me of shooting stars. I couldn't be more grateful to be in such an incredible country like Bulgaria!

Title: Umbrella Street - Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria

Description: It was the moment I saw the "umbrella street" that I fell in love with the little town of Blagoevgrad where my host university is. When I arrived, it didn't feel like a very developed town and there was lots of graffiti everywhere that I wasn't used to, and that I thought affected the look of the town. The first weekend though, I went shopping and turned to walk down the main street when I had to stop and take in the fun, colorful, and whimsical umbrellas that lined the street spanning the whole town. It was completely unexpected, and at the same time, the perfect touch.

Title: What to Bring/Not to Bring Lessons - Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria

Description: Prior to coming to Bulgaria, I attended orientations and did research on what was commonly worn by Eastern European citizens because I didn't want to make myself vulnerable while traveling. This meant leaving behind: jean shorts, plaid shirts, my Seahawks jersey and accessories, and my Western gear. Naturally, when I arrived over in Bulgaria and saw the other students with plaid shirts and american football gear, I was a little disheartened. But now I know better for next time. Until then, this little makeshift WWU notebook will have to be enough!

Title: 7 Rila Lakes Field Trip

Description: This is a photo of the 7 Rila Lakes. We took a field trip there as part of my Intro to Bulgarian course and spent an entire day marveling at the natural beauty of Bulgaria. I managed to reach all seven lakes during the hike, and after stopping for lunch, my Bulgarian teacher had us sing some Bulgarian folk songs she'd brought. None of us were native speakers and we probably didn't do the songs justice, but other hikers stopped to listen and it was a beautiful song in the spirit of the lakes.
