- Kioni Paniyiri (Town Festival) - Greece
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Our last official evening together as a group landed on the very special evening - Kioni's Paniyiri or town festival. A stage was built, the dancing circle cleared, food prepared, and lots of seating for the bustling, wildly entertaining evening of feasting on great food, dancing with the whole town, and laughing together. It was a wonderful way to say goodbye to the little village that we all fell in love with and to each other, after forming a close-knit bond in a short amount of time.

- Festival in Bairro Alto - Lisbon, Portugal
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- One of my excursions was to Portugal's capitol, Lisbon. The hostel we stayed at was on the top of a hill, in a neighborhood called Bairro Alto. This particular neighborhood is known for its local, laid- back feel, and these streamers were found on almost every street.

- Through the Lens of an Artist - Italy
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This photo was taken in the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. As you can see, we are all huddled around my professor as he points out all the intricacies of the beautiful paintings that we had studied. It was such an amazing experience getting to go and see all the art that we had read about. It really made the pieces comes to life.

- The Alhambra - Granada, Spain
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This picture was taken in Granada, Spain, where I think I learned the most! This was probably the most important city for us, because it is the very city that Christopher Columbus received permission from Isabel and Ferdinand to set sail to go to India; which obviously he ended up in what is now the United States of America! This picture was taken from way up in The Alhambra, which is a giant Moorish castle from the 11th century. Absolutely breathtaking.

- A new cultural awareness of happiness being our main priority - Zanzibar, Tanzania
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- This is a photo of me with one of the local girls in the community that we spent most of our time in. She was one of the students that came to our after-school tutoring program, and always had the biggest smile on her face. Her smile was contagious and reminded me that happiness should always be our number one priority above all else.

- Double Rainbow Kitchen Superteam Go! - India
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- I spent the summer of 2014 completing a health education internship at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, outside of Lumla in Arunachal Pradesh, India. One of my duties was to create a list of observations and suggestions for the community regarding the improvement of kitchen sanitation. I started my observations by volunteering an extra set of hands to help make dinner for the community. I ended up loving my time with the kitchen staff so much that I was regularly hanging out in the kitchen and peeling potatoes or grinding garlic for thukpa (thick Tibetan-style vegetable noodle soup) several nights a week. This photo is of Sharda, me, Kalu, and Rajiv (left to right), part of the kitchen "superteam" posing in front of a double rainbow outside of the kitchen at Jhamtse Gatsal.

- The Miracle of Water - Tanzania
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- An hour outside camp, our Land Rover sprung a flat tire. We had rolled to a stop mere meters from two young boys standing at the side of the road asking for handouts. A fellow student in our vehicle stepped outside, filled a bottle with water from our supply, and handed it to the older child. The older boy graciously handed it down to the younger, who could not contain his thirst. It is amazing that a simple thing like clean water is such a spectacular thing to many people in this part of the world. Meanwhile, we take it for granted every day. We can find it everywhere, while these young children depend on the generosity of complete strangers to drink healthy water every once in a while.

- Las Escaleras de La Catedral de Granada - Spain
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- Next to one of the main plazas of Granada sits the the grand Cathedral. Everyday, come rain or shine, performers were there to greet the tourists and on the weekends church bells rang with joy to celebrate a new marriage. On weekdays students filtered in and out for school tours, and always large masses were held. Engaging with the people in this square was when I finally began to feel that Granada was my home. Eventually, the cathedral became a normal sight to me, and I became more concerned with getting to my favorite churros con chocolate restaurant around the corner and catching an impromptu flamenco show.

- Class 5-3 - Japan
- Date
- 2014
- Description
- For our Japanese Folklore class we took many field trips, including an optional volunteer opportunity at a local elementary school. Unfortunately, I'm unable to post a photo with the children, as I was unable to contact the school for their permission. It was a great experience. The children weren't interested in us because we spoke English, or because we were foreigners. They simply saw us as new friends and as new playmates. Here, I'm pictured with my friend, Keitaro Hanzawa (right), with a warm welcome message full of drawings and comments from the fifth graders that we volunteered with. My favorite part is probably the blue text right under the "W" in "Welcome," since it's just a list of random English words that they knew written in Japanese like "jump" and "magazine."
