Title: Sounds of the Rainforest

Description: On a night hike for a field study class at La Selva, I ran into many red eyed tree frogs. These frogs are a national symbol for Costa Rica and difficult to spot on the wild. I was very lucky to see as many as I did, especially this mating pair. The photo was shot on my phone camera with a little teamwork to get the flashlight lighting perfect. Thanks to the frogs for being very patient with me and showing off their beautiful colors.

Title: Studying Trees from the Inside Out

Description: As an environmental science student, many of my classes abroad involve doing field studies. For my Natural History of Mesoamerica class, we studied plants in Monteverde. This photo was taken as I was inside of a Strangled Fig tree that had taken over the host tree and left a hollow inside.

Description: While on a small weekend trip, I had the chance to visit the Cloud forests of Monteverde. This is a really special place because there are not many cloud forests left in the world today. I am grateful that I got the chance to see this one, especially from the hanging bridges above the canopy. I am proud as a Viking to support the environment, even in other countries.

Title: The Edge of Catastrophe - Poas Volcano, Costa Rica

Description: Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. I have always been fascinated by the ecosystems surrounding volcanoes, so shortly into the semester I took the opportunity to visit. Poas had been closed for a couple of years due to volcanic activity. The national park was opened for about two months before it erupted once more, a week after I had visited. Seeing an active volcano made me realize the fragility and dependence of life on the environment.

Title: The Waterfall at the End of a Tough Hike

Description: This moment was captured by a friend as I took the time after a emotionally and physically grueling hike. There is nothing better than taking a deep breath in front of roaring waters. Feeling the mist from the water on my face and staring in awe at the scenery was worth every second of the hike.

Title: Cocos en la playa!

Description: This is a photo of me discovering coconuts on the beach of Playa Uvita. The landmark I was visiting is known as the Uvita Whale Tail because it is a natural outcrop that you can see from space at low tide and it resembles the tail of a whale. It was an amazing time standing in the middle of the whale tail. Waves wash onto the shore from both sides and then when the tide gets high enough, the waves crash into each other and eventually engulf the landmark. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica, if not the entire world. Our program we were studying was Global Entrepreneurship and innovation in the social sector. Our final week was an independent study week and I chose to study the unique market of hostels in Costa Rica, in particular, the Flutterby house located in Uvita ten minutes from where I took this photo. It is a hot spot for tourists to see the landmark and they often stay at the Flutterby house for its nice amenities, cheap surfboard rentals and prime location near some of the best surf on most beautiful beach in the world.
