Maasai Modesty - Tanzania
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
Upon her realization, an hour into our homestay, that I had brought my camera along, she rushed us out of the hut made entirely of tree branches and goat dung to take pictures of everything she could. But as soon as the camera turned on her, her eyes cast downward, her way of showing modesty and dignity in her Maasai culture. Flies coated her scalp, and her brilliantly-colored clothing was dingy from wear and work, but her joyful spirit was contagious. I left that day with hundreds of photos taken by the true residents of the land.

Capital of Culture

Description
-
This photo was taken in Plovdiv, one of the more popular towns in Bulgaria. I feel so lucky to have been in Plovdiv in 2019 because this year it is one of the two European Capital's of Culture. The Capital of Culture initiative highlights the role of culture in building identity and over 300 projects have been organized in Plovdiv. They include festivals, exhibitions, and theater productions. Plovdiv is especially proud of its artwork, and this lion was my absolute favorite!

"With An Open Heart" - Leeward Islands
-
Date
-
2019-07-16
-
Description
-
Throughout my experience sailing between the Leeward Islands, I was taken back by not only the density of history we learned aboard, but the intensity of energy on each island that rang true of how powerful the history is and how present it stayed on each island. Islands were in obvious distraught due to recent hurricanes and local lack of funds to recover, but this never shook the smiles on the local communities faces. We were given the chance to hike through volcanoes and work on the farms of local islands and each second spent among these beautiful souls I felt a shift in my own angle on life and the will to pursue my own passions despite all conflicts. The stories and day to day lifelines of each community on their own islands, taught me so much about stepping my foot into the world outside of my own. Too often we are caught in our own bubbles and forget the pleasure of popping that comfort zone and branching out, to whatever degree you can.

Plaza Mayor at Night - Salamanca, Spain
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
This was taken in Salamanca, Spain, where we did our studying. This is in the plaza mayor at night, when all the lights were turned on. This was single-handedly the most important place in our trip because this was the place where you met up with people if you had to go somewhere, where you went to hang out if it was too hot in the dorms, where you went to grab a quick tapa and vino after or before dinner, and also, when the world cup was going on, they brought out TVs so the whole community could watch the world cup together. This is Salamanca.

Hike along Seoul City Wall
-
Date
-
2019
-
Description
-
Inwangsan, a mountain area where you can hike alongside a portion of the 18.6 km long wall that was built to protect the city from invaders back in 1396. At the top, you can get a glimpse of the incredible views of the entire city and it's absolutely amazing. As hiking culture in Korea is very prominent, locals as well as tourists, can always appreciate the incredible landscape and scenery of such a historically and culturally rich city.

Lujan Flota
-
Date
-
2018
-
Description
-
This picture was taken in Lujan, Argentina. This was the second year Lujan did the Lujan Flota event where there was music, good food and games for the whole family to enjoy. The main part of this event, however, was the many hot air balloons that people were able to see up close, some even letting people get aboard for a little bit! I am pictured here in front of a hot air balloon that has "Lujan" written on it, everything here is named after the Lady of Lujan (the patron saint of Argentina), including me!

Namahage-san?? - Japan
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
The Namahage are a local tradition in Akita Prefecture. They are essentially folklore-esque monsters played by ordinary people in town, who dress up once a year and go door to door drinking lots of sake and scaring the children into behaving. They also tend to appear in tourist locations as they are somewhat of an icon of Akita. This picture presents my slightly bewildered reaction to encountering one up close.

Ferria de los Flores - Medellín, Antioquia
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
When I first arrived in Medellín, I learned that the city was in the middle of its annual flower festival, Ferria de los Flores. On the final day of the festival, the streets of downtown were blocked off to host the outgoing parade. Every participant that passed us was adorned with spectacular flower arrangements. I suppose I shouldn’t have expected anything less from the City of Eternal Spring!

Music is Everywhere

Cuba is all about music, dancing, and color. This photo is of a musician playing his trumpet on an otherwise quiet street corner. My favorite part of Cuba was the liveliness of the city and this man's music made the city that much more alive.

Mini-Monks at the Tawang Monastery - India
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
These young monks were playing on a cell phone on a rooftop just outside of the gompa at the Tawang Monastery. Due to its remote location and restricted access for foreigners, the Mon region of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India is one of the last areas in which Tibetan culture remains mostly intact. With the recent construction of a road leading to the nearby border with Bhutan, the region is no longer as isolated and is increasingly open to outside influence. This photo offers an interesting juxtaposition of traditional culture with the products of such globalization.

Calle Betis - Spain
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
Calle Betis (the row of buildings) and the Puente de Triana (the bridge), both pictured, are two of the most popular gathering spots in Sevilla, Spain. This is where the locals spend their time eating tapas with friends, and shopping at the Mercado de Triana (Triana Market) for fresh fruits and vegetables. Sevilla became my second home while I was there, and this little slice of the city was a huge part of that. This photo was taken on my last night there, right after the sun had set.

SakuraSakura - Japan

Description
-
One of the things I have dreamed of doing since I started studying Japanese was to go Hanami (literally flower viewing). Hanami involves going to the park and sitting under the beautiful cherry blossoms while enjoying food and drinks with friends and family. To me, cherry blossoms are one of the most aesthetically pleasing things to the eyes. Hanami ususally lasts about a week, and it's so big in Japan that they have blooming forecasts so that you can find out when the cherry blossoms are at their peak. It's times like these when I wish I actually had a real camera, as even this photo does not capture the true beauty of the cherry blossoms I saw that day.

This is a photo of the Masai Tribe that my group of volunteers and I had the opportunity to visit. They performed their traditional dance and song for us upon arrival, and then invited us into their household structures and informed us of their way of living. It was a very inspirational and eye-opening experience that I will never forget.

One of the three iconic windmills of Kioni village on the island of Ithaca, Greece. The people of Kioni are very proud of these historic mills, even lighting them in the evening so they can be seen. Jazz Band at the Duomo - Florence, Italy
-
Date
-

-
Description
-
The Duomo is always a center of lively action and culture. There are street performers, artists, musicians, and vendors in a crazy mix of tourism, culture, and excitement. In this photo I was hoping to grasp some of the energy that circulates around Duomo. Kids playing, adults waiting, and pigeons flying while the Italian 3 piece jazz band adds cadence to the moment.
