Preservation of a Culture

Description

This photo was taken in Zaouiat Ahansal, a remote mountain village in the Haut Atlas of Morocco when I was there studying development. This village has historical importance as an Islamic religious site but had fallen into disrepair during the French Colonialization. Rather than leave it to crumble, though, many people dedicated to seeing this cultural site preserved have worked to restore the Zaouiat to its original condition, encouraging the village to preserve its lifestyle. This photo captures the mosque and some of the unique mountain architecture of this village and reminds me of the importance of not allowing the diverse cultural traditions to be lost under westernized development.

Kay y la Puesta del Sol - Morocco
-
Date
-
2014
-
Description
-
After racing through the desert in the back of an old, worn in Jeep with our guide blasting Jay-Z through a wired in mp3 player, we stopped to watch the sunset. Our guides were taking a moment to make their evening prayers while my friends and I were taking a moment to realize what an adventure we were having. Kay jumped. The photo was snapped. Pure joy and bliss and comfort. I will never stop exploring. I will never stop seeing. I will never stop experiencing.

Morning in Jemaa el-Fna: Morocco
-
Date
-
2019-02-16
-
Description
-
Jemaa el-Fna is known as the "busiest square in Africa," surrounded by a maze of souks, filled with snake charmers, merchants hawking wares, tourists, locals, motorcycles and movement. In the morning however, the still square was empty and this fruit vendor was setting up his stall as the morning call to prayer rung out of speakers all around the Red City of Marrakesh. A small moment of daily life isolated from the usual hustle and bustle of the city.

Sharing Couscous - Morocco

Date

Description
-
This is one of the first meals that I had when I arrived in Morocco for the first time. This was the moment when it struck me that I really was in another country, with a completely different culture from mine. Sharing this communal meal of couscous (which was really delicious) with everyone at the table was a new experience for me, a new way of eating food. Despite the cultural differences, I was able to connect to the other people around the table and start to build relationships. It was a beautiful, eye-opening moment for me.

A Gnawa Lesson
-
Date
-
2019-11-09
-
Description
-
This photo is of me learning to play a Gnawan song. Gnawa is an important musical tradition in Morocco, with Gnawan music being played at many of the important festivals and holidays in Morocco. This particular day was right before Aid-el Mawlid, the Muslim holiday celebrating the Prophet Mohammed's birth. I learned to play a certain rhythm and tried to sing the lyrics of the song, which were about Allah, and while I have a long way to go before I am a Gnawa musician, I had fun.
