Title: Princess for the Day at Gyeongbukgung Palace

Description: Gyeongbukgung Palace is centered in the heart of the city where visitors can take in the beautiful architecture and scenery of the palace grounds while also being dressed in traditional Korean style hanboks. Being able to walk around such a historic site in such beautiful clothes was such an incredible experience and truly felt like we were experiencing a moment in time of life in the Joseon dynasty.

Title: Plaza Mayor at Night - Salamanca, Spain

Description: This was taken in Salamanca, Spain, where we did our studying. This is in the plaza mayor at night, when all the lights were turned on. This was single-handedly the most important place in our trip because this was the place where you met up with people if you had to go somewhere, where you went to hang out if it was too hot in the dorms, where you went to grab a quick tapa and vino after or before dinner, and also, when the world cup was going on, they brought out TVs so the whole community could watch the world cup together. This is Salamanca.

Title: Through the Arch

Description: This photo was taken at Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, on the island of St. Kitts. We spent hours taking in the breath taking sights and absorbing the rich and raw history of how this fort came to be and the power and culture it still holds today. On the boat we were taught the history written and portrayed through words, but being on the grounds and exploring the incredible buildings was a lesson all on its own. Words do not compare to emotions you feel when you find yourself engulfed in the modern day historical sites.

Title: Preservation of a Culture

Description: This photo was taken in Zaouiat Ahansal, a remote mountain village in the Haut Atlas of Morocco when I was there studying development. This village has historical importance as an Islamic religious site but had fallen into disrepair during the French Colonialization. Rather than leave it to crumble, though, many people dedicated to seeing this cultural site preserved have worked to restore the Zaouiat to its original condition, encouraging the village to preserve its lifestyle. This photo captures the mosque and some of the unique mountain architecture of this village and reminds me of the importance of not allowing the diverse cultural traditions to be lost under westernized development.

Title: Rila Monastery

Description: During Orientation Week, one of the first places they took us was Rila Monastery. Despite being so high up in the mountains, we were still surrounded by trees on all sides and it was an incredibly spiritual spot to visit because you felt so close to the heavens. The architecture and the artwork throughout almost felt unreal. I've seen lots of churches in Bulgaria since then, but Rila Monastery holds a special place in my heart.

Title: Parque Güell - Barcelona, Spain

Description: This picture was taken at Parque Güell in Barcelona, Spain. This was a particularly inspiring moment for me because I had heard about the amazing architecture by Antoni Gaudí for years, but I was finally there, experiencing it in person! From this viewpoint, we could watch the sunrise over Barcelona and see the ocean, the construction of La Sagrada Familia, and see all the intricate detailing put into Parque Güell. It was truly amazing!

Title: Ferhat Pasha Mosque - Republika Srpska, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Description: This photo shows the painted dome of the mosque. This mosque was destroyed in the 1990s during the ethnic cleansing of Bosniak Muslims by Serbs in the wars of the 1990s. It was my cohorts first stop on our week-long excursion dedicated to learning about and honoring the more than 8,000 muslim victims killed in the Genocide. The mosque was rebuilt in 2001 and now signifies the resilience of Bosniak Muslims and their refusal to be erased.

Title: Plaza de España - Seville, Spain

Description: This was taken in the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain at dusk. This is a huge landmark in Spain, where people can enjoy the intricately decorated architecture. There are even ducks you can feed! Outside of the plaza is a huge garden that you can get lost in for hours! It was amazing to sit by the fountain and watch the sun set over Seville in the Plaza de España.
