Description: I knew that when I decided to study abroad in Portugal that a trip to the Azores would be obligatory, as my great-grandparents left these islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean nearly a century ago. I was hit hard by emotions as I stepped off the plane. I was where my ancestors had lived, where they had laughed, where they had loved. I was walking in the same fields they had played in and were buried in. A place that should have seemed unfamiliar was the opposite of that; I was home.

Description: The Imperial Palace Garden in the middle of Tokyo. It really struck me how in such a huge, dense urban city as Tokyo could have these pockets of nature. It was really quiet and peaceful in the park, but you could still look up and see tall buildings in any direction. I really admired the respect for nature and allowing room for these green spaces.

Title: Lunchtime in the Serengeti - Tanzania

Description: This photo was taken late afternoon on an exceptionally warm day in Serengeti National Park. A hundred meters from the road lay two large lionesses and a group of seven cubs. When the pair stood to stretch for a moment, every cub pounced on the chance for an afternoon snack. The lions stood in the middle of a large open savanah, a characteristic landscape of the Serengeti. This was the first time we had seen so many cubs in one location with so few adults nearby.

Description: There was an abundance of wildflowers in the Himalayas, but this was one of my favorites. In a country surrounded by jaw-dropping landscapes, sometimes it's the little things that can take your breath away. These wildflowers grew everywhere so taking a picture of one at the top of the hill at one of our earlier campsites felt like a no-brainer and I loved how it turned out.

Title: Unsolved Mysteries - Rwanda

Description: This photo was taken when a small group of students and myself found ourselves wandering around an abandoned, pre-genocide military complex. The architecture style was different than any we had seen in Rwanda and there was an eerie stillness in the air as we wondered what it used to be. Although it was totally abandoned, it was no more than 100 yards from the main road through town, a poignant reminder of the events two decades earlier.
